City of Hobart citizenship ceremonies
When you are granted Australian citizenship, you will receive a letter from the Department of Home Affairs with the date and location of your citizenship ceremony.
Generally, your citizenship ceremony will be held at your local council within six months of your application being approved, although waiting times can vary.
If you are a candidate in the Hobart municipal area, we will send you a letter three weeks before the date of the ceremony. We conduct citizenship ceremonies approximately every three months.
You must attend the citizenship ceremony as the final phase of being granted Australian citizenship.
What happens at a citizenship ceremony?
Ceremonies take about one hour and are held at the Hobart Town Hall, 50 Macquarie Street, Hobart.
The Lord Mayor of Hobart presides over citizenship ceremonies and federal and state politicians who represent Hobart are also invited. You are welcome to bring two guests to the ceremony to share this special occasion.
At the citizenship ceremony you are required to pledge your allegiance to Australia and its laws. The pledge you say will be the one you chose on your application form.
You are then presented with a Certificate of Australian Citizenship, which formally represents conferral of Australian citizenship.
What to bring
You need to bring your letter from the Department of Home Affairs and photo identification, for example, a passport or driver’s licence.
You must arrive about 45 minutes before the ceremony so that you can register before the ceremony begins.
