Funding review

Funding review

The City of Hobart is proud to support the community through grants and sponsorships.

Since 2016, the City has invested over $30M in cash, resources and activities that enhance our community and culture, as well as shape the social and economic life of the city.

A lot has changed since the community grants program was first established. The City wants to be sure that the investment it makes is still contributing to a vibrant community in the best way possible and helping us deliver on our community purpose which is: Working together to make Hobart a better place for the Community.

The City of Hobart has begun a review of its current funding model for how the City funds activities and what it expects in return.

The goal is to streamline the administration of funding to better inform and assist applicants, as well as transition the City to a best-practice, fair, and efficient model to ensure long-term sustainability.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is the funding review?

The Hobart City Council is reviewing its programs of funding grants, sponsorships and partnerships to design a fit-for-purpose more contemporary model, and importantly to ensure they reflect the needs of our community and the priorities of Council.

The City of Hobart is proud to support the community through grants and sponsorships.

Since 2016, we have invested over $30M in cash and resources activities that enhance our community and culture and shape the social and economic life of the city.

Why are you undertaking the review?

A lot has changed since the funding programs were formalised. The City wants to be sure that the investment it makes is contributing to a vibrant community and is delivering value for rate payers.

It is our desire that the approach can be streamlined to better inform and enable applicants while ensuring the programs continue to support community outcomes.

What is the timeline for the review?

The review is currently underway. We are seeking input from the community, especially applicants and recipients of the funding programs, to help inform a new model.

We expect Council will consider the recommendations of the funding review at its Council meeting in May 2024.

The revised program will be implemented with updated funding opportunities once the policy is updated in July 2024.

How can I get involved?

We are seeking feedback from the community, especially applicants and recipients of the funding programs, to help inform the new model.

We'd also like to hear from the wider community to understand how you value activity we support. Please contact grants@hobartcity.com.au to provide your feedback.

How will my feedback be used?

The feedback will be used to inform the review as we seek to offer an improved funding program.

What does it mean for me?

Most of the City's grants, sponsorships and partnerships are offered on an annual basis. Council will consider the recommendations of this review to determine the City's approach to future funding opportunities. Shortly after Council makes a decision, we will take steps to implement the new model.

For ongoing funding arrangements, Council officers will brief you on the updated model and what impacts, if any, there are to the funding you have received. All contracted funding arrangements will be honoured. As long-term finding recipients, we strongly encourage you to provide feedback as part of the review. To ensure we understand how the funding is delivered in the best interests of the Hobart ratepayers and community more broadly.

Is Council considering changing the amount of funding available through grants or sponsorships?

The focus of the review is looking at determining a model that is delivered efficiently and effectively supports the needs of our community, as well as the priorities of Council.

Council will continue to determine the amount of funding available through grants and sponsorships through the budget process.
