The City of Hobart helps make sure food businesses are following food safety guidelines.

We can investigate food poisoning incidents, and unacceptable food safety practices.

Food poisoning

We can investigate food poisoning incidents at businesses located in the Hobart local government area.

You can report an incident if you consume food at a food business and experience symptoms such as:

  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea.

You can report an alleged food poisoning incident by completing the online form.

We will need as much information from you as possible to assist us with the investigation.

If the food business is in another local government area, please contact the relevant council.

Common food poisoning bacteria such as Salmonella sp. and Campylobacter sp. have an incubation period of 6–72 hours and 2–5 days respectively. The incubation period is the time between consuming food and developing symptoms.

It is strongly advised that you visit a doctor for a clinical diagnosis of the cause of your illness. Different food poisoning bacteria display different symptoms and incubation periods. They are also often associated with different foods. A confirmed diagnosis will assist our officers with their investigation.

Unacceptable food practices

We investigate concerns relating to food businesses in the Hobart local government area.

Some of the matters we investigate are:

  • foreign matter found in food
  • poor personal hygiene
  • pest infestations
  • unclean food premises
  • food premise waste storage/refuse
  • poor food storage/handling practices.

Please report any unacceptable practices in food businesses located in Hobart by using the online form.
