Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Bay Road, New Town

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bay Road will be closed to traffic at the Bell Street, New Town roundabout from 7 am to 4 pm daily, from Monday 14 October 2019 to Thursday 17 October 2019 for the purpose of conducting asphalt road repairs.

Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Criterion Street (between Liverpool Street and Bathurst Street), Hobart will be closed to traffic from 6 am to 11 am on Wednesday 9 October 2019 for the purpose of conducting crane works. 

 

Pirie Street, New Town

The City of Hobart will be undertaking construction works on New Town Road between Roope Street and Sunnyside Road New Town.

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that entry to Pirie Street from New Town Road will be closed to traffic from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm daily from Friday 13 September 2019 to Friday 11 October 2019 for the purpose of conducting kerb and footpath works. 

The exit from Pirie Street into New Town Road will be unaffected, remaining open throughout the works.

 

Bathurst Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street between Campbell Street and Brooker Avenue, Hobart will be closed to traffic (intermittently) between 8 pm and 6 am from Monday 16 September 2019 to Friday 18 October 2019 for the purpose of undertaking overhead bridgeworks on the Brooker Avenue pedestrian bridge.

 

Morrison Street and Castray Esplanade, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Morrison Street (between Murray Street and Salamanca Place) and Castray Esplanade (between Morrison Street and the Silos Link Road) Hobart will be closed to traffic at all times from 7 am on Sunday 29 September 2019 to 6 am Monday 14 October 2019, for the purpose of conducting stormwater maintenance.
 

Bell Street, New Town

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bell Street between Risdon Road and Bay Road, New Town will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm daily starting Monday 7 October 2019 to Friday 11 October 2019 for the purpose of conducting asphalt road repair works .

 

Queens Domain Road Cleary’s Gates Road and Summit Loop Road

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Queens Domain Road, Cleary’s Gates Road and Summit Loop Road will be closed to traffic for two days only between 1 October 2019 and 30 November 2019, from 9 am to 3 pm for the purpose of conducting a hazard reduction burn (weather permitting).

Upper Domain Road and Aberdeen Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Upper Domain Road and Aberdeen Street will be closed to traffic for a one day hazard reduction burn (weather permitting), between 1 October 2019 and 31 December 2019 from 8.30 am to 5 pm.

Upper Domain Road

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Upper Domain Road will be closed to traffic for a one day hazard reduction burn (weather permitting), between 1 October 2019 and 31 December 2019 from 9 am to 5 pm.

 

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street, Hobart will continue to stay closed to east bound traffic at Campbell Street from Tuesday 1 October until Friday 31 January 2020 for the purpose of construction activities at the Hedberg.

 

Melville Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the westbound traffic lane in Melville Street between Argyle Street and Elizabeth Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from Saturday 31 August 2019 to Friday 25 December 2020 for the purpose of establishing a loading bay for construction works on the UTAS student accommodation building.

Castray Esplanade and Morrison Street, Battery Point

Montpelier Retreat, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982 notice is given that Montpelier Retreat, Hobart will be closed between Castray Esplanade and Salamanca Place, Hobart from Tuesday 3 September 2019 to Monday 2 December 2019 (including weekends) for the purpose of conducting Salamanca infrastructure upgrade works.

 

Murray Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Murray Street between Liverpool Street and Collins Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from 12 midnight to 6.30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Monday 12 August 2019 to Friday 29 November 2019 for the purpose of crane lifting works.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2019.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
