Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Melville Street between Argyle Street and Elizabeth Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the current part closure of a section of Melville Street (in the block between Argyle Street and Elizabeth Street), Hobart will remain closed to westbound vehicular traffic from Saturday 26 December 2020 to Friday 29 January 2021 for the purpose of facilitating construction on the UTAS student accommodation building.

Princes Street between King Street and Randall Street, Sandy Bay

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Princes Street (between King Street and Randall Street), Sandy Bay will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 5:30 pm on Monday 4 January 2021 to Monday 15 February 2021 for the purpose of conducting stormwater upgrades. The road will be opened up after works each day.

Melville Street between Elizabeth Street and 40-44 Melville Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Melville Street between Elizabeth Street and 40-44 Melville Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from 5:30 pm on Friday 8 January until 5:30 pm on 29 January 2021 for the purpose of conducting underground service upgrades and building fit out.

Collins Street between Market Place and Argyle Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Collins Street between Market Place and Argyle Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm on Sunday 17 January 2021 for the purpose of Lifting air conditioning units onto the Hobart Private Hospital.

Sun Street between Sackville Street and Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Sun Street between Sackville Street and Collins Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from 6:30 am to 6 pm on Wednesday 20 January 2021 for the purpose of removing construction equipment from the Hedberg Centre.

Pinnacle Road from the Springs Car Park to the summit of Mount Wellington

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government Act 1983, notice is given that Pinnacle Road from the Springs Car Park to the summit of Mount Wellington will be closed to traffic from 8 pm to 1 am on the evenings of Friday 22 January 2021 and Saturday 23 January 2021 for the purpose of conducting an event at the summit of Mount Wellington.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from:

  • 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market.
