Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Bathurst Street, Hobart

Intermittent Night Works; Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street between Campbell Street and Brooker Avenue, Hobart will be closed to traffic intermittently between 8 pm and 5 am from Monday 26 August 2019 to Friday 30 August 2019 for the purpose of earthworks and asphalt works associated with the Brooker Avenue Bridge construction.

Pirie Street, New Town

The City of Hobart will be undertaking construction works on New Town Road between Roope Street and Sunnyside Road in New Town. Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that entry to Pirie Street from New Town Road will be closed to traffic from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm daily from Friday 23 August 2019 to Friday 13 September 2019 for the purpose of conducting kerb and footpath works.

Vehicles will be able to turn left from Pirie Street onto New Town Road though out these works.

 

Melville Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the westbound traffic lane in Melville Street between Argyle Street and Elizabeth Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from Saturday 31 August 2019 to Friday 25 December 2020 for the purpose of establishing a loading bay for construction works on the UTAS student accommodation building.

Castray Esplanade and Morrison Street, Battery Point

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982 notice is given that Castray Esplanade, Battery Point will be closed to westbound traffic between Silos Link Road and Morrison Street from Wednesday 26 June 2019 to Monday 2 September 2019 (including weekends) for the purpose of conducting Salamanca infrastructure upgrade works.

 

Pirie Street and New Town Road, New Town

The City of Hobart will be undertaking construction works on New Town Road between Roope Street and Sunnyside Road, New Town. 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that entry to Pirie Street from New Town Road will be closed to traffic from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm daily from Wednesday 7 August 2019 to Thursday 22 August 2019 for the purpose of conducting kerb and footpath works.

The exit from Pirie Street into New Town Road will be unaffected, remaining open throughout the works.

 

Murray Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Murray Street between Liverpool Street and Collins Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from 12 midnight to 6.30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Monday 12 August 2019 to Friday 29 November 2019 for the purpose of crane lifting works.

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street will be closed to eastbound traffic from 7 am Saturday 13 January 2018 to 6 pm Thursday 29 August 2019 for the purpose of facilitating building construction works.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2019.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
