Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Murray Street and Argyle Street, Hobart, will be closed to traffic from 6 pm to 11 pm on Thursday 9 January 2020 for the purpose of removing the CBD Christmas decorations.

Wellwood Street, Lenah Valley

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Wellwood Street between Creek Road and Colebrook Street, Lenah Valley, will be closed to traffic from 7 am on Monday 13 January to 4.30 pm Monday 3 February 2020 for the purpose of conducting concrete threshold and footpath upgrade works.

 

Aberdeen Street, Hobart 

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Aberdeen Street between Liverpool Street and Edward Street, Hobart, will be closed to traffic from 7 am on Monday 13 January to 6 pm on Saturday 25 January 2020 for the purpose of conducting Street and pedestrian upgrades.

Elphinstone Road, Mount Stuart
 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Elphinstone Road, between Toorak Avenue and Strathern Street, Mount Stuart, will be closed to traffic weekdays from 7 am to 4 pm from Monday 6 January 2020 to Friday 17 January 2020 for the purpose of conducting kerb and footpath works.

Lansdowne Crescent, West Hobart 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Lansdowne Crescent, between the Hill Street and Patrick Street intersection and Petty Street, West Hobart, will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 5 pm daily from Tuesday 7 January 2020 to Friday 31 January 2020. This is for the purpose of conducting asphalt reconstruction and overlay works. 

 

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street, Hobart will continue to stay closed to east bound traffic at Campbell Street from Tuesday 1 October until Friday 31 January 2020 for the purpose of construction activities at the Hedberg.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
