Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street will be closed to eastbound traffic from 7 am Saturday 13 January 2018 to 6 pm Thursday 29 August 2019 for the purpose of facilitating building construction works.

 

Bathurst Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street between Campbell Street and Brooker Avenue will be closed as follows:

  • 5 am to 12 pm on Saturday 13 April 2019 and Sunday 14 April 2019

  • overnight from 8 pm to 6 am Monday 15 April 2019 to Wednesday 17 April 2019

  • 8 pm to 6 am Monday 29 April 2019 to Friday 3 May 2019

for the purpose of conducting bridge construction works.

 

Sun Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Sun Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 5 pm daily from Friday 1 March to Tuesday 30 April 2019 for the purpose of conducting construction works.

 

Colville Street, Battery Point

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Colville Street between Sloane Street and Trumpeter Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 5 pm daily from Monday 1 April 2019 to Friday 24 May 2019 for the purpose of conducting footpath, kerb and gutter upgrade works.

 

Hatton Gardens, Sandy Bay

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Hatton Gardens will be closed to traffic from 9 am to 4 pm daily from Tuesday 9 April to Thursday 11 April 2019, subject to weather conditions, for the purpose of removing a tree.

 

Allison Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Allison Street will be closed to north bound traffic coming off Lansdowne Crescent from 7.30 am to 4 pm on Tuesday 9 April to Thursday 18 April 2019 for the purpose of conducting stormwater maintenance works.

 

Pinnacle Road, Kunanyi / Mt Wellington

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Pinnacle Road from Gate 3 at The Springs to the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington will be closed to vehicles and bicycles for the purpose of conducting car park resurfacing works at the summit from 7 pm Wednesday 10 April until 4 pm Friday 12 April 2019. Pedestrian walking track access will be maintained. 

Please observe all signage and directions from our contractors whilst this work is being completed. 

Those who plan to visit the mountain will be required to park their vehicles at The Springs car park. 

 

Castray Esplanade, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the left turn from Morrison Street into Castray Esplanade will be closed to traffic from 8 am to 4 pm on Wednesday 10 April to Thursday 18 April 2019 for the purpose of conducting stormwater upgrade works.

 

Newdegate Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Newdegate Street between Lochner Street and Mellifont Street will be closed to traffic week days only from 7 am to 6 pm daily from Tuesday 23 April to Wednesday 31 July 2019 for the purpose of conducting road reconstruction works.

Victoria Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Victoria Street between Harrington Street and the dead end of Victoria Street will be closed to traffic from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday 5 May 2019 for the purpose of conducting Unions Tasmania’s May Day celebration.

 

Pirie Street And Roope Street, New Town

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Pirie Street will be closed to north bound traffic from New Town Road and Roope Street will be closed to south bound traffic from Pirie Street from Tuesday 7 May to Thursday 9 May 2019 from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm for the purpose of conducting test holes in the footpath.

 

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2019.

 

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
