Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Collins Street between Elizabeth Street and Kemp Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Elizabeth Street and Kemp Street will be closed to traffic from 1AM to 7AM on Saturday 5 June 2021 and Saturday 19 June 2021 for crane lifts onto an adjacent roof top. In case of inclement weather alternative dates for these lifts are Saturday 12 June 2021 or Saturday 26 June 2021.

Sullivans Cove, Hobart – Dark Mofo Winter Feast

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that:

Castray Esplanade (from Montpelier Retreat to the Silos Link Road) will be closed to traffic from:

  • 5AM on Friday 11 June 2021 to 5PM on Tuesday 22 June 2021.

Morrison Street and Gladstone Street (from Murray Street to Salamanca Place) will be closed to traffic from:

  • 6PM to 1AM on the evening of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 and Friday 18 June 2021
  • 3PM to 1AM on the afternoon and evenings of both Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June 2021.

Murray Street (from Macquarie Street to Morrison Street) will be closed to through traffic (local access vehicles and public transport providers will retain access) from:

  • 6PM to 1AM on the evening of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 and Friday 18 June 2021
  • 3PM to 1AM on the afternoon and evenings of both Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June 2021.

These closures are for the purpose of conducting the Dark Mofo Winter Feast event.

Sandy Bay

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the following streets in Sandy Bay will be closed to traffic for clean and camera inspection works between 14 June 2021 and 16 June 2021:

  • 48 Princes Street from 7AM to 11AM; and Queen Street between Regent Street and Grosvenor Street from 11.30AM to 4PM on 14 June 2021
  • 79 Queen Street from 7AM to 11AM; and 10-15 Grosvenor Street from 11.30AM to 4PM on 15 June 2021
  • Stanley Street from 7AM to 11AM; and Marsden Street from 11.30AM to 4PM on 16 June 2021.

The following streets in Sandy Bay will be closed to traffic for sewer pipe relining works between 17 June 2021 and 24 June 2021:

  • 48 Princes Street from 7AM to 4PM on 17 June 2021
  • Queen Street between Regent Street and Grosvenor Street from 7AM to 4PM on 18 June 2021
  • 79 Queen Street from 7AM to 4PM on 21 June 2021
  • 10-15 Grosvenor Street from 7AM to 4PM on 22 June 2021
  • Stanley Street from 7AM to 4PM on 23 June 2021
  • Marsden Street from 7AM to 4PM on 24 June 2021.

Hobart – Dark Mofo Dark Downtown

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the following streets will be closed to general traffic at the following dates and times:

Melville Street (from Harrington Street to Murray Street) will be closed to traffic from:

  • 5PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, and Friday 18 June 2021.
  • 4PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Saturday 19, Sunday 20 June 2021.

Bathurst Street (from Harrington Street to Murray Street) will be closed to traffic from:

  • 6PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, and Friday 18 June 2021.
  • 4PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Saturday 19, Sunday 20 June 2021.

Watchorn Street will be closed to traffic from:

  • 4PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, Friday 18, Saturday 19, and Sunday 20 June 2021.

Liverpool Street (from Harrington Street to Murray Street) will be closed to traffic from:

  • 6PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, and Friday 18 June 2021.
  • 4PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Saturday 19, Sunday 20 June 2021.

Harrington Lane will be closed to traffic from:

  • 5PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, and Friday 18 June 2021.
  • 4PM to 6AM overnight, on the evenings of Saturday 19, Sunday 20 June 2021

These closures are for the purpose of conducting the Dark Mofo Dark Downtown event.

Collins Street between Elizabeth Street and Argyle Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Elizabeth Street and Argyle Street will be closed to traffic from 7:00AM to 3:00PM on Sunday 27 June 2021 for the purpose of lifting air conditioning units onto the NAB building.

Elizabeth Street Bus Mall between Macquarie Street and Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the Elizabeth Street Bus Mall between Macquarie Street and Collins Street will be closed to traffic from 7:00AM to 7:30AM on Sunday 27 June 2021 for the purpose of conducting lifting operations from the bus mall to an adjacent building.

Patrick Street between Elizabeth Street and Murray Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Patrick Street between Elizabeth Street and Murray Street will be closed to vehicles travelling westbound from 29 June 2021 to approximately 1 May 2023 for the purpose of facilitating construction works at 62 Patrick Street.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from:

  • 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market.
