Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Colville Street and Waterloo Crescent, Battery Point

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Colville Street between Sloane Street and Trumpeter Street, and Waterloo Crescent between Hampden Road and Colville Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 5 pm daily from Monday 19 November to Friday 21 December 2018 for the purpose of conducting kerb and gutter reconstruction.

 

Newdegate Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Newdegate Street between Mellifont Street and Lochner Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm from Wednesday 28 November to Thursday 20 December 2018 for the purpose of conducting stormwater works.


Sun Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Sun Street between Sackville Street and Collins Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm daily from Monday 17 December to Thursday 20 December 2018 for the purpose of erecting scaffolding and pouring concrete.

 

Castray Esplanade, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Castray Esplanade from Morrison Street to Silos Links Road will be closed to traffic from 7 am Sunday 16 December to 11 pm Saturday 5 January 2019 for the purpose of conducting The Taste of Tasmania early site set-up. 

 

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed to traffic from 7 pm on Monday 17 December to 1 am on Tuesday 18 December 2018 for the purpose of conducting a crane lift.

 

Salamanca Place, Battery Point

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Salamanca Place between Montpelier Retreat and Woobys Lane will be closed to traffic from 3 pm on Friday 21 December to 1 am on Saturday 22 December 2018 for the purpose of conducting a pre-Christmas celebration event.

Sullivan's Cove, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the following roads will be closed to traffic from 6 am on Wednesday 26 December 2018 to 11 pm 5 January 2019 for the purpose of conducting The Taste of Tasmania: 

• Elizabeth Street (Morrison Street to Franklin Wharf)

• Franklin Wharf (Constitution Dock Bridge to Morrison Street)

• Morrison Street (Murray Street to Salamanca Place)

• Morrison Street (Elizabeth Street to Murray Street) southbound traffic.

 

Pedder Street, New Town

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Pedder Street  between Rattle Street and Carlton Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm on Wednesday 2 January 2019 to Thursday 10 January 2019 for the purpose of conducting reseal preparation works.

 

Colville Street, Battery Point

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Colville Street between Sloane Street and Trumpeter Street will be closed to traffic from 7am to 5pm from Wednesday 2 January to Sunday 31 March 2019 for the purpose of conducting footpath kerb and channel upgrade.

 

Argyle Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Argyle Street between Elizabeth Street and Davey Street will be closed to traffic from 6 am Saturday 9 February to 7 pm Monday 11 February 2019 for the purpose of conducting the Wooden Boat Festival.

 

Elizabeth Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Elizabeth Street between Morrison Street and Franklin Wharf will be closed to traffic from 7 am Monday 4 February to 9 pm Wednesday 13 February 2019 for the purpose of conducting the Wooden Boat Festival.


Newdegate Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Newdegate Street between Mellifont Street and Lochner Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm from Monday 14 January to Friday 29 March 2019 for the purpose of conducting stormwater works.


Federal Street, North Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Federal Street between Elizabeth Street and Thomas Street, and Thomas Street from Federal Street to Yardley Street will be closed to through traffic from 8 am to 6 pm on Sunday 17 February 2019 for the purpose of conducting the Festa Italia Street Festival.


Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street will be closed to eastbound traffic from 7 am Saturday 13 January 2018 to 6 pm Thursday 29 August 2019 for the purpose of facilitating building construction works.

 

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2018.

 

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
