Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart  

Liverpool Street between Criterion Street and Murray Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Liverpool Street between Criterion Street and Murray Street will be closed to traffic on one to two nights a week from:

  • 12 midnight to 6.30am between Monday 3 August 2020 and Monday 31 August 2020

 for the purpose of conducting crane works. Access to Criterion Street will remain open throughout the closure.

Melville Street between Elizabeth Street and Argyle Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Melville Street between Elizabeth Street and Argyle Street will be closed to through traffic from:

  • 6am to 6pm on Saturday 8 August 2020

 for the purpose of conducting TasNetworks infrastructure upgrade works. Access to driveways and off-street car parking will remain available through the works.

Sun Street between Sackville Street and Collins street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Sun Street between Sackville Street and Collins street will be closed to traffic daily from:

  • 7am to 5pm from Tuesday 11 August 2020 to Thursday 13 August 2020

for the purpose of conducting asphalt reinstatement works.

 

Murray Street  between Davey Street  and Morrison Street

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that McAulay Road between Norfolk Crescent and Churchill Avenue will be closed to traffic from:

  • 7am Tuesday 11 August 2020 to 4pm Thursday 13 August 2020 for the purpose of conducting stormwater maintenance works.

Murray Street  between Davey Street  and Morrison Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Murray Street  between Davey Street  and Morrison Street  will be closed to traffic from:

  • 6am Friday 14 August 2020 to 5pm Monday 17 August 2020 for the purpose of conducting tower crane dismantling works.
In the case of inclement weather preventing the works proceeding, a contingency date of 6AM Friday 21 August 2002 to 5PM Monday 24 August 2020 is planned.

Princes Street between Queen Street and Quayle Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Princes Street between Queen Street and Quayle Street will be closed to traffic from:

  • 7.30am to 5pm daily from Monday 20 July 2020 to Friday 21 August 2020, excluding Saturdays and Sundays

for the purpose of conducting water main renewal works.

Lyndhurst Avenue between Elizabeth Street and Mortimer Avenue

Pursuant to Section 25(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Lyndhurst Avenue between Elizabeth Street and Mortimer Avenue will be closed to traffic from: 

  • 7am to 4pm daily from Monday 10 August 2020 to Friday 28 August 2020

for the purpose of conducting asphalt reseal preparation  works.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from:

  • 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market.
