Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart. 

Current road closures approved by the City of Hobart

 

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of setting up a mobile crane on the street for equipment lifts onto a construction site, at the following times:

  • from 7 pm on Friday 3 November to 5 am Monday 6 November 2017; and
  • from 7 pm on Friday 10 November to 5 am Monday 13 November 2017.

King Street, Sandy Bay

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that King Street between Sandy Bay Road and Princes Street will be closed to east bound traffic from 6 pm to 6 am for night works only from Monday 6 November to Wednesday 8 November 2017 for the purpose of installing gas connections.

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that King Street between Sandy Bay Road and Grosvenor Street will be closed to westbound traffic from 9am to 4.30pm daily from Wednesday 8 November to Saturday 11 November 2017 and Monday 13 November 2017 for the purpose of constructing traffic islands. Woolworth’s rear car park can be accessed via Regent Street.

Liverpool Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Liverpool Street between Elizabeth Street and Murray Street will be closed to traffic from 7 pm to 6 am from Monday 6 November 2017 to Thursday 9 November 2017 for the purpose of line marking works.

Murray Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Murray Street between Davey Street and Morrison Street will be closed to traffic from 7 pm on Friday 17 November 2017 to 9 pm on Sunday 19 November 2017 for the purpose of conducting tower crane erection works.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2017.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
