Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Sullivans Cove – Dark Mofo and City of Hobart Winter Feast

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that:

Castray Esplanade (from Montpelier Retreat to the Silos Link Road) will be closed to traffic from 5 am on Tuesday 12 June to 5 pm on Tuesday 26 June 2018; and

Morrison Street (from Elizabeth Street to Salamanca Place) will be closed to southbound traffic from:

  • 6 pm on Thursday 21 June to 1 am on Friday 22 June 2018; and
  • 3 pm on Saturday 23 June to 1 am on Sunday 24 June 2018.

Evans Street and Hunter Street, Hobart – Dark Mofo – Dark Park Event

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Evans Street (between Davey Street and Hunter Street) and Hunter Street (between Davey Street and Franklin Wharf) will be closed to general entering traffic at the following times:

  • 4 pm Thursday 21 June to 1.30 am Friday 22 June 2018;
  • 4 pm Friday 22 June to 12.30 am Saturday 23 June 2018;
  • 4 pm Saturday 23 June to 12.30 am Sunday 24 June; and
  • 4 pm to 10 pm on Sunday 24 June 2018.

Access will remain open to authorised vehicles through the closure period.

It should be noted that Franklin Wharf from Elizabeth Street to Hunter Street will be closed to traffic by TasPorts from 4pm to 10pm from 15 June to 17 June 2018 and again from 4 pm to 10 pm on 21 June to 24 June 2018.

Liverpool Street, Hobart Dark Mofo Night Mass

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Liverpool Street between Murray Street and Harrington Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting Dark Mofo Night Mass from:

  • 8 pm Friday 22 June to 4 am Saturday 23 June 2018;
  • 8 pm Saturday 23 June to 4 am Sunday 24 June 2018; and
  • 8 pm Tuesday 26 June to 4 am Wednesday 27 June 2018.

Salamanca Place, Battery Point - Festival of Voices Bonfire

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Salamanca Place between Wooby's Lane and the Silos will be closed to traffic from 6 am to 11.59 pm on Sunday 8 July 2018 for the purpose of conducting the Festival of Voices Bonfire.

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street will be closed to eastbound traffic from 7 am Saturday 13 January 2018 to 6 pm Thursday 29 August 2019 for the purpose of facilitating building construction works.

Pursuant to Section 25(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 6 pm on Saturday 23 June and Sunday 24 June 2018 for the purpose of conducting construction works at 40 Elizabeth Street.

Pursuant to Section 25(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 6 pm on Saturday 30 June 2018 for the purpose of conducting construction works at 40 Elizabeth Street.

Bathurst Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street between Campbell Street and Brooker Avenue will be closed to traffic from 8 pm on Thursday 28 June to 6 am on Friday 29 June 2018 for the purpose of conducting line marking.

Montagu Street, Lenah Valley

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Montagu Street between Doyle Avenue and Gordon Avenue will be closed to traffic from 9 am to 3.30 pm daily from Wednesday 20 June to Thursday 5 July 2018 for the purpose of conducting road repairs and asphalt overlay.

Pine Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Pine Street between Hill Street and Lochner Street will be closed to traffic from 11 am to 5.30 pm on Saturday 30 June 2018 for the purpose of conducting a street party.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2018.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
