Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

 Mount Stuart Road, Mount Stuart

Pursuant to Section 

Hugos Lane, West Hobart 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Hugos Lane between Forest Road and Amelia Street, West Hobart will be closed to traffic weekdays from 7 am to 4 pm on Wednesday 20 November 2019 to Monday 16 December 2019 for the purpose of conducting Road repairs and asphalt overlay works.

Elphinstone Road, Mount Stuart
 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Elphinstone Road between Toorak Avenue and Strathern Street, Mount Stuart will be closed to traffic weekdays from 7 am to 4 pm on Monday 18 November 2019 to Friday 20 December 2019 for the purpose of conducting kerb and footpath works.

 

Newdegate Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Newdegate Street between Lochner Street and Mellifont Street, West Hobart will be closed to traffic week days only from 7 am to 6 pm daily from Thursday 7 November 2019  to Friday 20 December 2019 for the purpose of conducting road reconstruction works.

 

Melville Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that the westbound traffic lane in Melville Street between Argyle Street and Elizabeth Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from Saturday 31 August 2019 to Friday 25 December 2020 for the purpose of establishing a loading bay for construction works on the UTAS student accommodation building.

Upper Domain Road and Aberdeen Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Upper Domain Road and Aberdeen Street will be closed to traffic for a one day hazard reduction burn (weather permitting), between 1 October 2019 and 31 December 2019 from 8.30 am to 5 pm.

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Upper Domain Road will be closed to traffic for a one day hazard reduction burn (weather permitting), between 1 October 2019 and 31 December 2019 from 9 am to 5 pm.

 

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street, Hobart will continue to stay closed to east bound traffic at Campbell Street from Tuesday 1 October until Friday 31 January 2020 for the purpose of construction activities at the Hedberg.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2019.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
