Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart  

 

Davey Street, South Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19 (1) (b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Davey Street between the Southern Outlet and Elboden Street, South Hobart will be closed to traffic from 7 pm to 6 am nightly from Sunday 26 April 2020 to Thursday 30 April 2020 for the purpose of conducting road works.

 

Upper Domain Road, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Upper Domain Road between the TCA Oval and Carriage Drive, Queens Domain will be closed to traffic from 9 am to 5 pm on two separate days between Monday 9 March 2020 and Tuesday 30 June 2020 for the purpose of conducting hazard reduction burns.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Salamanca Place between Montpelier Retreat and Gladstone Street will be closed to west bound traffic from 8 am Monday 18 May 2020 to 4.30 pm Friday 5 June 2020 for the purpose of conducting stormwater reconstruction works.

Salamanca Place will remain open at all times to vehicular traffic travelling eastbound into the Salamanca Precinct to visit businesses and the COVID-19 testing centre.

Melville Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Melville Street between Elizabeth Street and Argyle Street will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm on Friday 5 June 2020 for the purpose of conducting mobile crane set-up for concrete precast panel erection.

Traffic controllers will maintain access to off-street carparks on this section of Melville Street.

 

Salamanca Place between Montpelier Retreat and Gladstone Street

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Salamanca Place between Montpelier Retreat and Gladstone Street will continue to be closed to west bound traffic from 4.30 pm Friday 5 June 2020 to 4.30 pm Friday 3 July 2020 for the purpose of conducting stormwater reconstruction and general civil works. 

Salamanca Place will remain open at all times to vehicular traffic travelling eastbound into the Salamanca Precinct to visit businesses and the COVID-19 testing centre.

 

Watchorn Street and Bathurst Street

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Watchorn Street between Liverpool Street and Bathurst Street will be closed to vehicular traffic and Bathurst Street between Murray Street and Harrington Street will be closed to westbound traffic from 5.30 am to 9.30 pm on Saturday 6 June 2020 for the purpose of dismantling and removal of a tower crane.

In the case of inclement weather the works may be rescheduled to Sunday 7 June 2020 from 5.30 am to 9.30 pm

 

York Street and Regent Street

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Regent Street will be intermittently closed to north bound traffic at the York Street intersection, from 9 am to 3 pm on weekdays from Tuesday 9 June 2020 to Thursday 11 June 2020. 

York Street between Regent Street and Adams Street will be closed to traffic from 7am to 4 pm daily from Tuesday 9 June 2020 to Friday 3 July 2020.
