Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart.

Current road closures approved by the City of Hobart

Liverpool Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Liverpool Street between Molle Street and Liverpool Crescent, Hobart will be closed to westbound vehicles at Molle Street from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm on weekdays between Tuesday 11 June 2019 and Monday 1 July 2019 for the purpose of conducting asphalt road surface repairs and traffic island construction.

Traffic seeking to access Liverpool Street will be able to do so via Forest Road and Liverpool Crescent.

Despard Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Despard Street between Murray Street and Brooke Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from 6.30 am to 11.30 am on Wednesday 26 June 2019 for the purpose of conducting crane lifting works.

  

Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Criterion Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic from 6 am to 10.30 am on Wednesday 26 June 2019 for the purpose of conducting crane works.

 

St Stephens Avenue, Sandy Bay

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that St Stephens Avenue, Sandy Bay will be closed to traffic from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm (daily, weekdays only) from Monday 17 June 2019 to Friday 7 July 2019 for the purpose of profiling the road surface and an asphalt overlay.

Collins Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(c) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,notice is given that Collins Street between Campbell Street and Sun Street will be closed to eastbound traffic from 7 am Saturday 13 January 2018 to 6 pm Thursday 29 August 2019 for the purpose of facilitating building construction works.

Newdegate Street, West Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Newdegate Street between Lochner Street and Mellifont Street will be closed to traffic week days only from 7 am to 6 pm daily from Tuesday 23 April to Wednesday 31 July 2019 for the purpose of conducting road reconstruction works.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday during 2019.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
