Temporary road closures

The City of Hobart will close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities. However, closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when the benefits for the community justify the closure.

Please note: All City of Hobart road closures are done under the authority of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982. 

Special events that require a permit from Tasmania Police 

The following are events occurring on public streets that are typically managed by Tasmania Police: 

  • motor vehicle race, cycling or athletic events
  • demonstrations or street processions
  • charitable collections.

Please be aware that some road work and emergency activities do not require approval by the City of Hobart  

 

Hampden Road, Battery Point 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Hampden Road between Waterloo Crescent and Colville Street, Battery Point will be closed to traffic from 7 am to 4 pm daily from Monday 16 March 2020 to Thursday 9 April 2020 for the purpose of conducting asphalt road repair/overlay works.

A full road closure will be in place during working hours, overnight on weeknights Hampden Road will partially reopen, and on weekends traffic conditions will operate as normal.

Gladstone Street, Hobart 

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Gladstone Street between Castray Esplanade and Salamanca Place will be closed to south bound traffic from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays from Monday 24 February 2020 to Friday 13 March 2020 for the purpose of conducting road construction works for Salamanca upgrade.

 

Gladstone Street, Battery Point

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Gladstone Street between Castray Esplanade and Salamanca Place, Battery Point will be closed to south bound traffic from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays from Tuesday 10 March to Thursday 9 April 2020 for the purpose of conducting road construction works.

 

Liverpool Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 19(1)(b) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982,  notice is given that Liverpool Street between Elizabeth Street and Murray Street, Hobart will be closed to traffic on one to two nights a week from 12 midnight to 6.30 am between Thursday 27 February and Monday 20 April 2020 for the purpose of conducting crane works. Access to Criterion Street will remain open throughout the closure.

 

Upper Domain Road, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 25(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Upper Domain Road between the TCA Oval and Carriage Drive, Queens Domain will be closed to traffic from 9 am to 5 pm on two separate days between Monday 9 March 2020 and Tuesday 30 June 2020 for the purpose of conducting hazard reduction burns.

Bathurst Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets) and Criterion Street, Hobart

Pursuant to Section 20(1) of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, notice is given that Bathurst Street (between Murray Street and Elizabeth Street) and Criterion Street will be closed to traffic for the purpose of conducting the Farm Gate Market from 6 am to 3 pm every Sunday.

Salamanca Place, Hobart

Salamanca Place is closed to traffic each Saturday from 5.30 am to 6 pm under the Salamanca Market By-law for the Salamanca Market. More information can be found here: Salamanca Market website
