Hobart Community Awards

The Hobart Community Awards are our chance to recognise and honour individuals and groups who are making an outstanding contribution to the Hobart community.

These awards are part of the national Australia Day Awards program.

Award recipients were recognised by the Lord Mayor of Hobart at a ceremony on 26 January 2022.

Award categories

Hobart Citizen of the Year

For noteworthy achievement or voluntary contribution to the Hobart community during 2021, and/or outstanding voluntary service to the Hobart community during many years.

Winner – Ms Li Yang

Building cross-cultural bridges and inclusion by facilitating volunteering opportunities for international students and migrants.


Hobart Young Citizen of the Year

For noteworthy achievement or voluntary contribution by someone younger than 25 years old to the Hobart community during 2021, and/or outstanding voluntary service to the Hobart community during many years.

Winner – Mr Oliver Hovenden

Long-standing commitment to human rights, social justice, and youth engagement.


Hobart Community Initiative or Event of the Year

For the most outstanding community initiative or event delivered between November 2020 and October 2021.

Winner – Students Against Racism

Challenging audiences to examine the causes and consequences of racism and how to combat it, while empowering group members in the process.
