Hobart Community Awards

Do you know a community hero? What about an amazing community event or initiative?

Nominate them for a Hobart Community Award. This is our chance to recognise and honour individuals and groups who are making an outstanding contribution to the Hobart community.

These awards are part of the national Australia Day Awards program, and Award recipients will be recognised by the Lord Mayor of Hobart at a ceremony on 26 January 2022.

Award categories

Hobart Citizen of the Year

For noteworthy achievement or voluntary contribution to the Hobart community during 2021, and/or outstanding voluntary service to the Hobart community during many years.

Hobart Young Citizen of the Year

For noteworthy achievement or voluntary contribution by someone younger than 25 years old to the Hobart community during 2021, and/or outstanding voluntary service to the Hobart community during many years.

Hobart Community Initiative or Event of the Year

For the most outstanding community initiative or event delivered between November 2020 and October 2021.

Eligibility criteria

  • Hobart Citizen of the Year:
    • Must be aged 25 years or older on 1 January 2022.
    • Must be living in the Hobart local government area at the time of nomination.
  • Hobart Young Citizen of the Year:
    • Must be younger than 25 years old on 1 January 2022.
    • Must be living in the Hobart local government area at the time of nomination.
  • Hobart Community Initiative or Event of the Year:
    • The community initiative or event must have taken place in, or contributed significantly to, the Hobart local government area.
    • The individual or group who organised the initiative or event do NOT need to reside in the Hobart local government area.
  • You can only nominate one person for either Citizen or Young Citizen of the year categories – no couples or groups.
  • Self-nominations will not be accepted for the Citizen and Young Citizen of the year categories.
  • You can nominate unsuccessful nominees from past rounds.
  • A past award winner cannot be nominated for the same awards category. They can be considered for recognition in a different category.
  • City of Hobart employees, Elected Members, or any of their immediate families cannot submit nominations.
  • City of Hobart employees, Elected Members, or any of their immediate families cannot be nominated for any of the award categories.
  • Sitting local, state and federal politicians and current vice-regal officers cannot be nominated. Retired politicians and officers could be considered for contributions made apart from their official duties.

How to nominate

Your submission should describe your nominee's contribution to the Hobart community, including length of time and the impact of their contribution.

Each nomination will be assessed on whether the contribution was:

  • outstanding (above expectation)
  • beneficial (to the Hobart community)
  • voluntary and/or personally demanding.

Terms and conditions

  • Award recipients will be selected by an assessment panel based on the quality of nominations received and information available to the panel at the time.
  • Award recipients will be invited to a range of official and community events during the year including but not limited to citizenship ceremonies, the ANZAC Day Morning Tea, and the City of Hobart Annual General Meeting.
  • The City of Hobart reserves the right to withhold an award if no suitable nominations are received. Similarly, the City of Hobart reserves the right to change an award category if it is considered more appropriate.
  • The City of Hobart reserves the right to withdraw an award at any time should the recipient's conduct bring the awards program into disrepute.
