Pets and animals
The City of Hobart is responsible for managing dogs, horses, goats, cows, sheep, pigs and injured wildlife in its municipal area.
We operate within the Dog Control Act 2000 and the City of Hobart’s Dog Management Strategy 2014–18 to create a caring, happy and safe environment for dogs and minimise their impact on other people, animals and the environment.
We work with a number of organisations including:
Keeping animals
Owners all of animals must comply with general requirements as outlined in the Health and Environmental Services By-Law.
Animal management after-hours service
We provide a 24-hour service to help locate the owners of dogs wearing City of Hobart registration tags that are found roaming the streets and attend dog attacks or injured animals.
For after-hours assistance please contact 03 6235 4237.
If you find a dog that is not wearing a registration tag, the following options are available:
1. Keep the dog until the next working day and contact us.
2.Take the dog to the Dogs’ Home of Tasmania.
3. Take the dog to the RSPCA shelter.
4. Contact your local vet or after-hours vet.
5. Contact Kimberley’s Pet Taxi who may be able to collect the dog and deliver it to the Dogs Home of Tasmania or a vet for a fee.
