Lenah Valley retail precinct upgrade

The Augusta Road shopping village in Lenah Valley was upgraded to improve the quality of the streetscape and pedestrian amenity, and to provide vibrant, accessible and attractive social spaces for the community.

About the Project

"Main streets are the focal points of our towns, villages and cities. They are the places where we meet friends, share lunch, spend time and shop. A town without a quality main street is missing out on the most fundamental of public spaces, and its residents forgo the social atmosphere of a thrumming communal space. There is a broad appeal to quality main streets, so it makes sense to invest in good ones." – MRCagney, 2015

In spring 2015, the City of Hobart and a team of consultants undertook a programme of community engagement to identify and prioritise streetscape upgrades for retail precincts across Hobart's local areas. An innovative 'tactical urbanism' approach was employed. Pop-up style events were held in local areas and communities were able to trial a range of temporary traffic interventions and streetscape improvements. Participants designed, organised, tested and proved their bold concepts, and the communities had a lot of fun in the process.

The Lenah Valley village community staged a highly successful event where a number of interventions were trialled. A master plan was then developed by the consultants which recommends the following improvements:

  • Increased footpath space on the southern side of Augusta Road to provide a people focused space
  • High quality finishes
  • Introducing deciduous trees to the street where they can be achieved
  • Improved road crossings for pedestrians
  • Maintaining the existing car parking and the addition of an accessible car parking space
  • New street furniture including bench seating
  • New bus shelters

Background

A project action team that included local businesses, residents and representatives from the Lenah Valley Community Association were involved in designing the changes to the street, which include new paving on the southern side, street trees and plants, new seating, new bus shelters, new lighting and public art. The final designs were also released for broad public feedback.
