Temporary closure of Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre

Published on 18 January 2018

The Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre will close for critical infrastructure upgrade works from 3 pm Saturday 17 February, re-opening at 6 am the following Monday, 19 February.

During the closure, the centre will install a gas powered hot water system. This will provide more reliable heating to the pool and showers, and potentially reduce the centre's carbon footprint. We will also take the opportunity to complete other minor maintenance works, and clean the centre following the busy school holiday period.

The new hot water system is part of the larger Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre Redevelopment project.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and hope that this work provides an improved visitor experience for our members and casual users.

Frequently asked questions

How long will the centre be closed?

The centre will close three hours earlier than usual on Saturday 17 February, at 3 pm. It will close all day on Sunday 18 February, and will re-open at the usual time of 6 am on Monday 19 February.

Why does the centre need to close?

We are installing gas boilers and a new hot water system. This new system will be more reliable and energy efficient than the current system, providing more consistent heating for the pools and showers.

The current heating system will need to be switched off and the water disconnected while we install the new system. Because of the lack of hot water for the pools, showers, and cafe, we will be closing the centre while the work is completed.

We will complete other minor maintenance projects during the closure, and will take the opportunity to clean the centre following the busy school holiday period.

What is the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre Redevelopment?

The Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre is a very popular community facility but at almost 21 years old, it is due for significant redevelopment. Following consultation with key stakeholders a Master Plan for the centre has been adopted, which proposes a total redevelopment  of the centre.

The full redevelopment will cost approximately $22M to undertake. The City of Hobart is currently in a position to fund $12M of the of the works, including a new indoor/outdoor cafe, a larger gym with two group fitness rooms and a spin classroom, a new retrofitted spa, new gym change rooms, and a number of other improvements.
