The City of Hobart’s Salamanca Market has taken out the Gold award in the Major Festivals and Events category and a Silver award in the Major Tourist Attractions category at the 2017 Tasmania Tourism Awards gala dinner held at Wrest Point tonight.

Presented by the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, the awards represent the pinnacle in industry recognition for outstanding business practices in tourism.

The Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Sue Hickey congratulated the Salamanca Market staff and stallholders on winning the prestigious awards.

“This is an outstanding achievement and due recognition for what is arguably one of Australia’s most recognised and enduring markets. The creativity, passion and commitment that over 300 stallholders and hard working Council staff put in week after week has helped to make Salamanca Market the most visited tourism attraction in Tasmania.”

“I would like to personally thank the Salamanca Market Stallholders Association and the hundreds of stallholders they represent for helping the market to be recognised by Tasmania’s travel and tourism peers,” said Ald Hickey.

Chairman of the Council’s Community, Culture and Events Committee, Alderman Bill Harvey said that the Salamanca Market had been operated by the City of Hobart since 1972.

“Over the past 45 years, the Salamanca Market has grown from strength to strength. Last financial year the Salamanca Market had over 900,000 visitors. This included dedicated locals who come every week rain, hail or shine as well as hundreds of thousands of visitors from interstate and overseas. Visitors to the Salamanca Market contributed around $40 million dollars into the local economy each year,” said Ald Harvey.

This year’s win for Salamanca Market comes off the back of being named the state winner for Best Tourism Event at the 2017 Australian Event Awards.
