Hazard reduction burn program starts this week

Published on 18 April 2018

The City of Hobart undertakes an annual program of hazard reduction burns through the Hobart area, in order to reduce the risk of bushfire.

The Autumn 2018 program is planned to start this Friday, with two burns scheduled to take place over the next few days.

Neither burn should generate a large amount of smoke, but people with asthma and other respiratory conditions should be prepared for some smoke to be present throughout Hobart.

All planned burns are weather dependent, and may be postponed in the case of adverse weather or changed wind conditions.

Friday 20 April - Queens Domain

The first burn scheduled for the Autumn 2018 program will take place on the Queens Domain, to the North West of the summit.

The burn will take place on Friday 20 April, and will start at some point between 10 am - 12 pm with the aim to have it completed by 3 pm.

This burn will cover 8.7 Ha of mostly fine grass fuels, with some light dead timber. The burn shouldn't create a large amount of smoke, and any smoke created should dissipate before evening sets in. The winds are predicted to blow the smoke away from the populated area of the city.

Monday 23 April - Brinsmead Reserve in Mount Nelson

The second burn planned for Autumn will be located in Brinsmead Reserve in Mount Nelson. This will be quite a small burn, covering 2.3 Ha of open forest.

It will take place on Monday 23 April, and will start at some point between 10 am - 12 pm with the aim to have it completed by 3 pm.

The fire is not expected to create a large amount of smoke, and winds are predicted to blow the smoke away from the populated area of the city.
