Japanese Children's Day celebration

Japanese Children's Day

The national Japanese holiday 'Kodomo no hi' – Children's Day is about encouraging children to be strong and resilient and wishing them health and happiness.

City of Hobart invites children and their families to come and experience this traditional cultural celebration together.

  • Meet the adorable bonito fish Yai Chan, Yaizu City's mascot
  • Make your own koinobori (carp streamer) and origami samurai helmet
  • Try some traditional Japanese games
  • Have a go at taiko drumming or calligraphy
  • Make some yummy Japanese sweets and treats
  • Watch some amazing cultural performances

City of Hobarts Children's Day celebrations are in recognition of our close connection with our sister city, Yaizu in Japan. Yaizu and City of Hobart have exchanged culture and ideas and been close friends for nearly 50 years and we want to continue our strong community links.
