Food recall - Poppy seeds

Several brands and products of poppy seeds have been recalled nationally, with consumers advised not to eat affected products.

Problem

The recall is due to the potential presence of a toxic chemical (thebaine) due to unsafe poppy seeds entering the food supply.

There have been cases of illness among people who have consumed large amounts of poppy seeds. No cases have been reported in Tasmania at this stage. However, recalled products have been sold in Tasmania.

The products covered by the food recall are available on the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) website at – National Recall of Poppy Seeds.

What to do

Consumers are advised not to eat these products and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

If you are concerned about the source of poppy seeds in your possession you should contact the supplier listed on the packet or the place of purchase.

Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice or assistance.

Anyone who has consumed the recalled products and is currently experiencing any unusual or severe symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

• Call the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26).

It is anticipated that additional products may be added to this recall.

The cause of the contamination is being investigated by state and territory food authorities.
