Forest Road Pedestrian Improvements

Pedestrian safety upgrades are coming to Forest Road in West Hobart to support safer, more accessible travel for everyone using the street.

The changes aim to create a safer environment for children and families walking or riding to Goulburn Street Primary School, by slowing traffic and improving visibility at key crossing points.

This project will result in:

  • An improved pedestrian transition and a refuge island at the entrance to Liverpool Crescent.
  • A raised pedestrian threshold at the entrance to Frederick Street.

Works are scheduled to begin from Monday, June 2 and are expected to take about three weeks, weather permitting. All works will take place during the day.

Traffic management will be in place on Liverpool Crescent and Frederick Street, while Forest Road itself will remain open and is not expected to be significantly impacted.

If possible, motorists are encouraged to avoid the area while works are under way, as there may be some congestion near the intersections.

Background

This project is based on community feedback gathered during the development of the School Access Travel Plan for Goulburn Street Primary School, adopted in 2024.

Key actions identified in the plan included:

  • "Provide pedestrian facility improvements at Frederick Street junction with Forest Road."
  • "Provide pedestrian facility improvements on Forest Road at Liverpool Crescent ... including a median crossing at junction of Liverpool Crescent."

The development of the School Access Travel Plan followed the Hobart Transport Strategy 2024, which identified improving safety on routes to and from schools as a key priority.

This project has been supported by a $140,000 grant from the Tasmanian Government's Vulnerable Road User program.
