Foxglove management in Hobart
Foxglove is a toxic, introduced weed that poses a threat to Tasmania's natural environment and agricultural sector.
In Hobart it threatens the natural values of our bushland parks and reserves.
That is why we are working with the community to manage and control foxglove, reducing its spread and protecting our native plants and animals from this highly invasive weed.
What is foxglove?
Foxglove (Digitalis) is a short-lived plant native to Europe, Asia and North Africa.
It is recognised by its tall spikes of tubular flowers, typically in shades of purple, pink or white.
While often found in gardens, foxglove contains toxic compounds that can be harmful to humans and animals if ingested.
In Tasmania, it has become an invasive species, threatening native ecosystems and agricultural land.
What you need to know
Under the Biosecurity Act 2019 and the Biosecurity Regulations 2022, all types of Digitalis plants (including all species, varieties, hybrids and cultivars that can reproduce sexually) are considered pests in Tasmania. This includes all foxglove plants, except for certain sterile varieties, hybrids and cultivars.
In Tasmania, it is illegal to:
- import
- supply or sell
- propagate
- release or spread foxglove.

How you can help
The City of Hobart encourages residents and property owners to take proactive steps to manage foxglove. Effective foxglove control requires planning, persistence, and follow-up.
Some key actions include:
- Plan your approach: Assess the extent of foxglove on your property and choose the best control method, whether manual removal, herbicide application, or a combination of both.
- Act early: Foxglove is easiest to control before it flowers. Remove plants early and bag seed heads to prevent spread.
- Follow up: Regularly check treated areas for regrowth and reapply control measures as needed. Foxglove management is an ongoing process.
- Prevent spread: Dispose of plant materimaterial properly and avoid disturbing infested areas during seeding. Inform neighbours if foxglove is present nearby.
By following these steps you can help protect our local environment and prevent the spread of foxglove. More detailed information on management and control can be found at:
