More than 25 years of climate leadership.
The City of Hobart has a long history of climate leadership and action.
We were one of the first councils in Australia to commit to addressing climate change in 1999. We were also the first capital city council in Australia to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency in 2019.
Over the years, we have:
- significantly reduced emissions from across our organisation
- supported electric and active transport
- invested in restoring nature and biodiversity
- worked to strengthen Hobart's resilience to a changing climate.
Today, our work is guided by the Climate Ready Hobart Strategy 2040. It was shaped by more than 1000 community conversations and Tasmania's first climate assembly on climate change. The strategy sets a shared vision for a zero emissions, climate resilient Hobart. It provides the roadmap for how we can work together with the community to achieve it.
We continue to lead by embedding climate action into the services, infrastructure, investments and decisions that shape our city. While also helping the community take action in ways that work for them.

That's why we work alongside residents, businesses, community groups, governments and partners to support and accelerate local climate action. We're helping make climate action easier, more accessible and more impactful for everyone. This is achieved through grants, programs, partnerships and practical resources.
