Winter doesn't mean hibernation or spending a fortune to be entertained. Here's seven cool things to do in Hobart that won't cost you a cent.

1. Soak in the spectacular cool views from the recently renovated lookout at The Springs.

The Springs lookout was refurbished earlier this year, is easy to access and offers breathtaking views over Hobart, the River Derwent and Storm Bay.

It is also a great spot to start or finish walks from kunanyi/Mt Wellington's trails and tracks.

2. Discover tranquillity on the Hobart Rivulet Track.

Part of an important rivulet park that runs from the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington to the edge of the city, the Hobart Rivulet Track is an important walking and cycling corridor and also a great spot for a stroll or even a picnic.

Make sure you keep any eye out for the rivulet's most famous inhabitant, the platypus.

3. Wander through Hobart's colourful Urban Art Walls.

Using buildings as a canvas, Hobart is making high quality urban art a celebrated part of our landscape.

The walls have been painted by experienced and emerging artists and include over 50 works completed since 2015.

4. Be part of the vibe at Salamanca Market.

Wander on down every Saturday morning to see why Salamanca is Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction.

It has a great community and welcoming atmosphere but be warned, while entry is free, there is a host of incredible arts, crafts, food, beverages, clothes and local produce to tempt anyone.

5. Immerse yourself in cool art at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG), where entry is free.

Take the family and let your children's imagination run wild with a mixture of art and science.

There's also an incredibly cool interpretive play area, mapiya lumi, which has a range of exciting spaces for children aged up to seven to discover.

6. Get the heart pumping on kunanyi/Mt Wellington’s mountain bike tracks.

Two of these new tracks, Rocky Wheel'n and Free Wheel'n, are fantastic green graded mountain bike rides that are great riding opportunities for less experienced riders, including younger kids and families.

Rocky Wheel'n is also an easy climbing, walking and running track designed for people of most ages and fitness levels and creates a new improved route from Fern Tree up to The Springs.

Free Wheel'n is ideal for new riders who want a safe but fun taste of riding downhill.

7. Finally, cozy up with cool reads at the Hobart Town Hall's Henry Hunter Room, completing your perfect, free, winter escape in Hobart.

The library provides a warm and welcoming space where everyone is invited to linger and look through the many books we've gathered on a range of Hobart themes by some incredible authors.

There's even some of our great Tasmanian children's books for the little ones to enjoy.
