First-term Hobart City Council elected member Gemma Kitsos brings a unique blend of professional expertise and community engagement to her new role.

Cr Kitsos was recently elected on a countback following the resignation of Deputy Lord Mayor Helen Burnet, who will join the Tasmanian House of Assembly as a member for the seat of Clark following the March state election.

Cr Kitsos brings to council a strong academic background with a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy with Honors, and currently serves as the Clinical Trials Manager at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, specialising in stroke research.

“In 2016, I relocated to Hobart in pursuit of a treechange, seeking a lifestyle defined by natural beauty, clean air, locally sourced food, and a welcoming community,” Cr Kitsos said.

Beyond her professional commitments, Cr Kitsos is a mother to three young children and finds solace in her garden or cycling adventures during her free time.

"My role with the University has given me invaluable experience in project management, fiscal responsibility, ethical conduct, and effective governance practices," she said.

Drawing from her background in healthcare, Cr Kitsos aims to champion accessibility initiatives for individuals with mobility limitations and promote a cultural environment that embraces growth and innovation.

"I aim to harness my experience in the arts to foster a cultural environment that appreciates growth and innovation, positioning our city as a beacon of artistic excellence," Cr Kitsos said.

Cr Kitsos said she was committed to fostering a council characterised by fairness, transparency, and sustainability.

"My vision entails assuming a leadership role that prioritises the challenges posed by climate change, enhances the overall health and wellness of our community, and implements proactive measures to alleviate traffic congestion through the promotion of active transportation solutions," she said.

Elected members will vote on to fill the position of Deputy Lord Mayor at the 29 April council meeting.
