Intercity Cycleway

Intercity Cycleway

The Intercity Cycleway is a popular commuting route for cyclists and offers a great family walk or ride close to the River Derwent.

It extends from Claremont in the north, to the Hobart Regatta Grounds in the south, and provides a connection into Sullivans Cove and the Hobart CBD.

It has plenty of places to stop and explore along the way and there is outdoor gym equipment at the Hobart end of the cycleway, where it meets McVilly Drive at the Regatta Ground car park.

Starting at the Cenotaph in Hobart the cycleway follows the River Derwent upstream, passing under the Tasman Bridge and close by the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

Further on, the playground at Cornelian Bay is just a short side trip away and an excellent spot for a snack or picnic.

The cycleway then leaves the river edge and soon reaches New Town Rivulet, from where keen riders can continue on to MONA and Claremont.

Section under repair

A section of the Intercity Cycleway just before the popular cycling route finishes its run into Hobart is now under repair after a concrete section was pushed out of the ground during very hot weather in December 2023, creating a hazard for cyclists, scooters and pedestrians.

Our parks crew have lifted off the faulty concrete to reveal a large tree root that has been slowly eroding the integrity of this part of the cycleway.

The concrete has now been replaced with compacted asphalt until the section can be re-concreted, expected to happen in January.

Two other areas nearby with similar issues will also be re-concreted.

A diversion lane is in place for when work crews are on site.
