In accordance with the Dog Control Act 2000, dog owners must take two steps in order to permanently identify their dog. Dog owners must register their dog with their local Council and have their dog microchipped.

Step 2: Microchipping your dog
Due to new State Government requirements it is now compulsory to microchip your dog once it is six months of age. Microchipping is generally undertaken by a vet, however can also be carried out by authorised persons in animal welfare shelters. The process is a safe, painless procedure for any dog and can cost approximately $30-$60 depending on your vet.
Once your dog has been microchipped your contact details and the details of the dog will be forwarded to the national registry. You will be given a Certificate of Identification, which will include the microchip number. It is your responsibility to notify Council of this number.
If you have any enquiries in relation to registration or microchipping, contact the Animal Management Unit on 6238 2182.
