Since 1986, Fay Ibbott has been a quiet but steadfast force behind one of Lenah Valley's most cherished community assets — the Lenah Valley Community Hall.
What began as a temporary favour for then-Secretary/Treasurer/Caretaker Jack Mahony turned into a lifelong commitment.
"Jack asked me to look after the Hall while he was away," Fay said.
"When he came back, he asked if I'd take it on permanently — and I said yes. I've been here ever since."
Over the years, Fay has found deep satisfaction in her role as one of the Hall's Trustees, helping to safeguard the venue on behalf of the City of Hobart. "It's a privilege to help take care of such a great community asset," she said.
"We're lucky to have this facility and the beautiful grounds around it, and I think the community really appreciates that."
Her work has been supported by a strong relationship with City staff and representatives, and more recently, through her involvement with the Lenah Valley Community Association — a partnership that has enriched both the Hall and the broader community.
The Hall itself is a hive of activity, hosting a wide variety of groups and events every day. From seniors' indoor bowling and martial arts to choir rehearsals, church groups, and social dances, the Hall is a vital space for connection and creativity. Its picturesque location in John Turnbull Park, complete with a safe playground, also makes it a popular choice for private functions and celebrations.

Among Fay's many fond memories is her mother's 100th birthday celebration — a fully catered event for 100 guests that brought together family members spanning every generation.
"It was a perfect day," she said.
"Mum wanted a big celebration, and the Hall was just the right place for it. We had family from age 0 to 100 — it was really special."
The community's appreciation for the Hall and its surroundings is evident in the strong support for events like the annual Quiz Night — now in its eighth year — and the much-loved Community Christmas Carols in John Turnbull Park, a major event proudly sponsored by the City of Hobart.
For Fay, the greatest reward has been the people.
"It's been a pleasure — mostly!" she laughs.
"I've met so many different people over the years, and I love helping them arrange their events and activities. It's nice to feel like you're making a difference."
After nearly 40 years of service, Fay Ibbott's dedication continues to shine as brightly as ever — a testament to the power of community spirit and the value of local spaces that bring people together.
