Festival of Bright Ideas

Get ready for a full day of hands-on science, tech, and innovation at the Festival of Bright Ideas (FOBI) — a high-energy showcase of Tasmania's brightest minds and boldest ideas.

Held at PW1 on Hobart's waterfront, this free, family-friendly event features interactive exhibits, explosive stage shows, and creative workshops designed to spark curiosity in all ages.

From robotics and space science to sustainability and virtual reality, FOBI is packed with activities that make learning fun and unforgettable. Whether you're a budding scientist or just love discovering how things work, this is one winter event you won't want to miss.

Hobart Hoedown Line Dancing Festival

30-31 August | Hobart City Hall

Get ready to boot-scoot your way through a weekend of country fun at the Hobart Hoedown!

Held at Hobart City Hall, this toe-tappin' event features line dancing workshops, live performances, and special guests including Laura Rittenhouse (pictured) from Boots and All Line Dancing and Golden Guitar winner Max Jackson. Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just keen to give it a go, the Hoedown promises high-energy entertainment and a great community vibe.

Even better, $15 from every Saturday and two-day ticket goes to support Dogs' Homes of Tasmania and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, with extra donations welcome at checkout. The venue is fully accessible, so everyone can join the fun.

City of Hobart Floral Shows

12-13 September | Hobart Town Hall

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a burst of colour at the Hobart Horticultural Society's Spring Show, held in the elegant Hobart Town Hall Ballroom.

This professionally judged event showcases stunning daffodils and camellias, with opportunities for amateurs and novices to get involved and learn the art of flower showing. Presented in partnership with the Tasmanian Orchid Society and the City of Hobart, the Spring Show is part of a long-running seasonal program dating back to 1875. Visitors can enjoy vibrant floral displays, purchase plants, and even photograph the blooms before public opening on Saturday morning.

The venue is fully accessible, with elevator access and parking available at the rear of the Town Hall.

Healthy Hobart – Mountain Bike Trail Ride

Sunday 14 September | Pipeline Track, Fern Tree

Ready to hit the trails? This Healthy Hobart mountain biking session is perfect for families and beginners keen to learn the fundamentals — think body position, braking, cornering, and more — all in a safe, supportive environment.

Recommended for ages 8 and up, children must be accompanied by a parent or support person. Riders should be confident on a bike and able to engage physically and socially with the group. You can bring your own bike or hire one for free on the day, but don't forget your helmet!

Spaces are limited and bookings are essential via the I'm In by Healthy Tasmania app. Arrive 15 minutes early to get set up and ready to roll.

A refreshed brand look, new signage, maps, and a bright info booth enhance the visitor experience.

Held every second Sunday, these events invite locals to bring their favourite recipes and cook in the park's wood-fired ovens with help from the friendly Oven Coordinator. While your dish bakes, kids can explore the nature-based playground, designed for all ages and abilities. With climbing walls, discovery gardens, and imaginative play zones, it's a wonderland for young adventurers. Legacy Park offers more than just great food and fun — it's a fully accessible space with picnic tables, grassy areas, an amphitheatre, public toilets, and shelters, making it perfect for a relaxed family day out.
