Burnett Street active transport connections

As part of the Tasmanian Government's Vulnerable Road User Program, we are delivering upgrades along Burnett Street to make it safer and more comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to travel between North Hobart and the city centre.

The project will enhance and increase the accessibility and safety for all road users of this major linkage road.

Project improvements

The project includes improvements along Burnett Street between the intersections of Argyle Street and Campbell Street, including:

• construction of a new shared path on the southern side of Burnett Street, replacing the existing ageing footpath
• improved pedestrian access across the Argyle Street slip lane
• repurposing the lesser-used right-turn lane to create a dedicated area for people riding bikes to wait at the traffic signals
• installation of a dedicated bicycle crossing and bicycle traffic signal to help riders safely cross Burnett Street
• accessibility upgrades throughout the project area, including improvements to kerb ramps
• new "no parking" restrictions near driveways and raised crossings to improve visibility for all road users
• renewal of sections of the existing footpath
• safer connection to the existing bike lane on Campbell Street, including removal of the current bicycle lane markings within the slip lanes.

Traffic and access

Detailed traffic modelling has been undertaken as part of the design process.

The modelling shows the proposed changes are not expected to change the level of service for any motorists at the junction.

Results indicate that the time drivers wait to turn right is expected to be lower than it is currently.

The project has been designed to improve safety and accessibility while maintaining efficient traffic flow through the area.

• enhance accessibility for people of all ages and abilities.
• provide a safer crossing point for people riding bikes.
• close a gap in one of Hobart's key cycling routes.
• renew ageing pedestrian infrastructure.
• support more sustainable and active transport choices.

Construction

Construction is currently expected to start in Wednesday 16 September 2026 and be completed by mid-November, weather permitting.

This project is being delivered as part of the Tasmanian Government's Vulnerable Road User Program, which aims to improve safety and accessibility for people walking, cycling and using other forms of active transport.
