Current stormwater projects
We are delivering a range of projects to better understand, manage and improve our stormwater network and waterways.
These projects help us respond to challenges such as flooding, ageing infrastructure, water quality and the impacts of climate change, while supporting a healthy and resilient city.
Our projects range from flood modelling and infrastructure renewal to waterway restoration, water quality monitoring and long-term strategic planning.
Strategy
Flood modelling update
We have existing flood reports developed between 2016 and 2019. Since then, Hobart has continued to grow and our understanding of climate change impacts on rainfall has improved.
We are developing new flood models that cover the whole local government area using consistent assumptions and the latest climate change science. These models will let us test different rainfall events and potential mitigation options, supporting better decisions about how we manage our stormwater system.
We have also upgraded our rainfall and river flow gauges to meet the latest Bureau of Meteorology standards, giving us better data to calibrate the models against.
The project is underway. We are currently calibrating the models against real gauged rainfall events to check their accuracy. Next steps include climate change analysis, scenario modelling, and making updated maps available to the public.
This work is co-funded by the Australian Government's Disaster Ready Fund.
Asset management planning
We have recently completed a revaluation of our stormwater assets.
This work is being used to update the Strategic Asset Management Plan which is a ten year outlook of likely project and expenditure.
Disaster mitigation
We are undertaking a project to better understand current and future community impacts from flooding and debris flow.
It draws on the flood modelling above, together with a new debris flow study, and will consider options for managing community risk.
This project is co-funded by the Australian Government's Disaster Ready Fund.
Stormwater Strategy
We are developing an overarching stormwater strategy to provide clarity on our level of service and intervention, risk appetite and priorities.
This will be developed with the entire organisation to provide clarity on decision making. We are aiming to complete this work by 2027.
Actions
These actions are in addition to our Capital Program, this can be viewed in the Annual Plan.
Pit basket renewals
The City has over 500 pit baskets collecting litter from CBD areas before it gets into the River Derwent.
These were installed about 20 years ago and we are starting a program of renewal as these assets are getting to end of life.
We are progressively inspecting and replacing baskets over time.
Pipe renewals and relining
Our current pipe renewal and relining program is focusing on older, often earthenware pipes, and areas that are underserviced by a piped network.
CCTV
A business as usual program of inspecting our piped assets using CCTV to identify pipes that require relining or renewal.
Waterways
Willow removal project
The Hobart crack willow removal project is removing willows through our rivulets.
It will reduce risks of pipe blockage from willow debris and improve environmental outcomes.
This is being undertaken with the help of a Disaster Ready Fund grant from the Australian Government.
State of our Rivulets Report
The previous State of our Rivulets Report was undertaken in 2023.
We are starting works and investigations into our Rivulets water quality to update the State of the Rivulets report.
This will provide valuable information on where and how to manage our waterways to best effect.
