Christmas and New Year bookings

All bookable BBQ sites are now fully booked during the lunch period on Christmas Day. However, we do still have limited availability for morning and evening bookings. If you would like to take advantage of this, please contact the Open Spaces Bookings Team on 03 6238 2711 as soon as possible.

As part of our end-of-year closure, any BBQ and Park booking requests received after 5 pm on Friday 19 December 2025, for dates between 20 December 2025 and 5 January 2026, will not be processed.

We offer the ability to book some of our parks, BBQs and facilities for your event.

All bookings made are subject to availability, approval and confirmation. When we get your application, we'll tell you if your chosen location and dates are free. If not, we'll suggest other options.

Parks, gardens and reserves bookings

You can make a booking application to hold an activity or event in one our parks gardens or reserves.

In addition to any booking fees, you may also need to pay a bond. Following your event, we will conduct an inspection. This is to make sure the park, garden or reserve is tidy and there is no damage from your event. If we are satisfied with the inspection, your bond will be refunded.

BBQ booking process

Most of the BBQs in our parks don't need a booking. They operate on a first-in, first-served basis.

If you're thinking about reserving a BBQ in one of our bookable sites, here's some helpful information to guide you through the booking process.

Booking process

Our BBQ areas are a popular choice for gatherings, especially during peak periods – to improve your chances of securing your preferred site, we strongly encourage you to submit your request as early as possible. Bookings can be made up to 12 months in advance.

Once we receive your request, we aim to get back to you within three working days. Please keep in mind that availability isn't guaranteed until your booking is confirmed.

Weekend requests

For bookings within three days of the weekend, please call the Open Space Bookings Team on 03 6238 2711 to discuss your request. Unfortunately, requests received after 10 am Friday cannot be accommodated.

Confirmation

Once we check availability and calculate costs, you'll receive a Booking Reference by email. Your booking is only confirmed once payment is received. Please check your junk/spam folder if you don't see a reply.

Legacy Park Community Hub bookings

Once payment is received, we'll confirm an Oven Coordinator and notify you of their availability by email – this can take up to three working days.

Changes and cancellations

Please notify us within three working days. While we do not offer refunds, you can reschedule your booking within 12 months of the original date. Please email openspacebookings@hobartcity.com.au or call 03 6238 2711 with your Booking Reference.

BBQs available for booking

Waterworks Site 1

Most of the BBQs in our parks don't need a booking. They operate on a first-in, first-served basis.

If you would like to reserve a BBQ, there are bookable sites in the following parks and reserves.

Waterworks Reserve

The tree-shaded lawns and children's play areas are popular for picnics and barbecues.

There are two undercover BBQ sites at Waterworks Reserve that can be booked.

Legacy Park

Legacy Park features a big adventure play area for kids of all ages. It includes an accessible community space for barbecues and picnics. There's also an outdoor amphitheatre, two pizza ovens, public toilets, and shelters.

There are two undercover BBQ sites available for booking at Legacy Park. The Community Hub which contains wood-fired ovens can also be booked.

Long Beach Reserve

Long Beach Reserve is a beachside park perfect for family barbecues and picnics. There is lots of lovely, grassed areas, nearby playing fields and cafes.

The undercover barbecue pavilion next to the play area can be booked.

Cornelian Bay Park

Cornelian Bay Park has a playground that is terrific for the kids, walking tracks, picnic tables, public toilets and plenty of parking.

There are a number of BBQ areas. One of these BBQs and a large covered area can be booked. This does not include the large, grassed area.

Skate parks

Cultural Park/North Hobart Skate Park

You can make a booking application for the use of either North Hobart Skate Park or John Doggett Skate Park.

Carrying out works, vehicle access , or research

If you want to carry out works in a City of Hobart owned or managed park or reserve you need a permit to do so.

Permit types are:

  • undertake works in a park or reserve
  • vehicle access in a park or reserve
  • undertake scientific research in a park or reserve.

You can apply for these permits on the permits for parks or reserves page.

This also applies to parks, gardens, beaches, waterways, natural and undeveloped land owned by the City of Hobart, and highways.

The City of Hobart Public Spaces By-Law 2018 requires that people seek approval to access these spaces. It protects vegetation, wildlife, landform and other assets in these areas.

More information

Depending on the type and scale of event, you may need some or all of the following permits:

Fees may apply to each permit and some will need to be obtained from other organisations.

Structures cannot be staked into grass at any location unless approval is obtained from the City. Approval may only be granted in circumstances where there is no other option available other than staking.

As well as a booking application you may also need to provide:

  • evidence of public liability insurance
  • venue or site plan
  • risk management plans
  • security management plans
  • road closure applications
  • traffic management plans.
