Hobart Respects All
Hobart Respects All is about treating every person with:
- Freedom
- Respect
- Equality
- Dignity
Everyone has strengths and skills.
When people get a chance to use their strengths, the whole community is better.
But not everyone has the same experience in Hobart.
Some people face barriers in:
- buildings and streets
- how people treat each other
- how information is shared
To be a city that respects everyone, Hobart must be fair, inclusive, and safe for all people who live, work, study or play here.
'Hobart Respects All' helps people understand these issues and works together for a positive change.
We Stand Together Against Rasicm
This campaign is from the six Greater Hobart councils.
It shows that everyone must stand against racism in every form.

Lift the Tone
Lift the Tone is about respectful communication.
It reminds us that:
- Healthy debate is good
- Abuse and scaring people is not okay
Nearly 80 per cent of elected representatives in Tasmania have experienced abuse.
This behaviour:
- makes people feel unsafe
- stops people from wanting to take part in government
- harms our community
Lift the Tone asks all Tasmanians to:
- speak up against abuse
- use respectful language
- help create safe spaces for everyone

Respect the Space
Everyone should be able to move safely around Hobart.
Clear footpaths help:
- people with disability
- people using prams
- older people
- people using mobility aids
We work with businesses to keep walkways clear and safe.
A member of the Access Advisory Committee made videos to show what walking through the mall looks like for someone with double vision.
How you can help
- Push your chair in when leaving a café.
- If you have a pram, stay close to it so people with low vision know you are there.
- Business owners: do not leave crates, boxes or signs where they block the path.
Anti-racism campaign
The City of Hobart is part of the Welcoming Cities network.
We want migrants, refugees and international students to feel valued, safe and welcome.
Many people say racism is increasing.
Racism harms people's health and wellbeing.
It also harms our whole community.
How to take action:
- Be there.
- Sit, stand or speak with the person being targeted. You do not have to speak to the person doing the harm if it feels unsafe.
- Report it using the reporting steps listed below:
- Call it out.
- If you feel safe, tell the person their behaviour is not okay.
- Use your power.
When one person takes action, others may join in.

Chances to join in
Giving people chances to join in helps them feel valued.
You can:
- get to know people who are different from you
- invite people to join activities you enjoy
- celebrate different cultures at home, school or work
- think about how you communicate so others feel included.

Spending time together helps us:
- listen
- learn
- support each other
- show respect
- celebrate what we have in common.
You can:
- say hello
- offer support
- share stories.
Challenge Unfair Ideas
Challenging unfair ideas about groups of people. For example: "All people…" or "People like that…".
These statements are usually not true.
They can hurt people and divide our community.
You can:
- listen to understand
- ask questions
- speak up when you hear unfair comments.
This helps build a safer community.
Brave Conversations
Be a friend.
Show people you will not accept unfair ideas or bullying.
You can:
- speak up if you feel safe
- talk to the person later if you cannot speak up at the time
- sit or stand with the person being targeted
- report the behaviour.
Every action helps.
