The rubber has hit the road with our $1.93 million summer roadworks program, which kicked off on Doyle Avenue in Lenah Valley.

That job should be wrapped up by the end of January, then it's on to Elizabeth Street in North Hobart.

Resurfacing roads stops potholes, cracks and hazards from forming and creates a safer road network in our city.

It also increases the life of our assets by keeping water out of the underlying pavement.

Summer program

$650 000 is being spent resurfacing Doyle Avenue and addressing other road safety issues. The Doyle Avenue project is funded through the Australian Government's Roads to Recovery Program.

Resurfacing of a major stretch of Elizabeth Street in North Hobart starts on Sunday 1 February. Costing $650 000, it has also been funded through the Australian Government's Roads to Recovery Program and by the City of Hobart ($446 000 from Roads to Recovery, $204 000 from the City).

In March more than half a million dollars will go to resurfacing Elizabeth Street between Macquarie and Davey streets.

The busy stretch of road between Town Hall and Franklin Square is part of the city's Metro bus hub. The project will include widening the footpath to make it easier and safer for bus commuters to board, especially during busy peak hour traffic.

The City is also continuing its annual road, bridge and maintenance program. This involves fixing footpath tripping hazards, potholes and bridge defects as well as renewing faded line marking.

Hobart's roads are the arteries of our city and used by every sector of our community.

They are critical for the delivery of the goods that drive our local businesses, they help get our kids safely to school and people to work.

Whether you run a transport business, drive a bus, run a delivery service, drive, ride or catch a bus to work or school, you rely on Hobart's roads.
