New Year's Eve

We are closing a number of roads around the waterfront to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Closures start at 9 pm Tuesday 30 December.

• Elizabeth Street (between Davey and Macquarie streets)
• Murray Street (between Davey and Morrison streets)
• Morrison Street (between Murray and Elizabeth streets)
• Montpelier Retreat (open for access to the two major parking stations)
• Despard Street
• Brooke Street
• Franklin Wharf
• Castray Esplanade
• Salamanca Place (from Davey Street to the Silos)
• Gladstone Street (access for taxis, residents and businesses only)

If someone is dropping you at the waterfront or you are getting a ride share service, there will be a drop-off/pick-up area at the bottom of Elizabeth Street (between Morrison and Davey streets).

If you have accessibility needs, an area has been allocated for people needing more time to get in and out of vehicles. Traffic wardens will provide directions and support as needed.

There will also be a taxi rank on Salamanca Place from 9 pm Tuesday 30 December.

Park and Ride - Regatta Grounds

Bring in the new year safely and conveniently with Park and Ride.

Park for free at the Regatta Grounds and a free shuttle bus will transfer you and your passengers to the city or waterfront!

Extended hours for car parks

Argyle Street Car Park access hours are extended to allow entry and exit until 11 pm.

Salamanca Square Car Park hours are also extended to allow entry until 11 pm and exit until 1.30 am on 1 January.

Accessible parking

Accessible parking will be available at:

Car parks: Accessible parking available in our car parks as usual, plus 6 additional spaces are allocated in the Salamanca Square Car Park. Both Argyle Street and Salamanca Square car parks have extended hours on New Year's Eve.

Town Hall Deck car park (10 spaces): Will be allocated to accessible parking from 3 pm on New Year's Eve. Enter via Elizabeth Street, through the road closure between Macquarie and Davey streets.

Castray Esplanade (3 spaces)

Hunter Street (10 spaces): in front of the IXL building.

Some accessible parking spaces usually available throughout the year, or specifically promoted for the Taste of Summer, will not be available on New Year's Eve due to road closures and safety.

Buses

On 31 December, the usual bus timetable will operate for Metro and Tassielink services.

Metro will operate the MAIB Nightrider bus from 7 pm until after midnight. Passengers pay half price fares with their Green Card or cash.

There will be two displays:

• 9.30 pm
• Midnight

Each display will last 8 minutes.

The fireworks will be set off from two barges on the River Derwent. The waterfront is a perfect place to watch.

We have mapped out some of the best potential viewing sites across Hobart.

The Regatta Grounds has a designated viewing area on the grassy hill looking over Macquarie Point to the Derwent and fireworks. This space will be car-free and have a food van, lighting and toilets available. It's a perfect spot to watch the action with space for picnic rugs and children to play.

All fireworks debris is biodegradable and is designed to not affect sea life or surrounding environments.

Seating and accessible viewing

There will be an accessible viewing area beside Elizabeth Street Pier. There will be limited capacity, so we suggest you arrive at least 30 minutes before the 9.30 pm and/or midnight fireworks. Please contact us at events@hobartcity.com.au if you would like further information.

There will be some seating available to watch the fireworks at Parliament Lawns and Franklin Wharf.

For your comfort, we have increased the number of services and amenities in the waterfront area.

Accessible toilets

In addition to the usual public toilets available around Hobart and the waterfront, three accessible toilets will be added for NYE:

• Franklin Wharf within the free-to-access Rolex Sydney Hobart Race Village
• Post Street
• Morrison Street Car Park

Patrons can expect loud noises in these areas:

• The entire waterfront area and nearby streets during the two fireworks displays from 9.30 pm to 9.40 pm and midnight to 12.10 am.
• Around the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race Village, Franklin Wharf
• Around Taste of Summer at the Princes Wharf 1 (PW1) and Salamanca Place

Quiet space

Whilst there will still be noise in the area, particularly from amplified music, Parliament Lawns and Princes Park at Battery Point should be less busy than the waterfront area.
