Help shape South Hobart’s future
Published on 02 October 2026
The City of Hobart is inviting the community to have its say on plans to improve safety, accessibility and public spaces around the intersection of D'Arcy, Washington and Macquarie streets in South Hobart.
Community engagement for the Macquarie Street South Junction Upgrade will run from 5 October to 1 November 2026, with residents, businesses and other stakeholders invited to learn more about the project and provide feedback on early concept designs.
The project is exploring opportunities to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, simplify movement through the busy junction and create a greener, more welcoming public space.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the intersection was one of South Hobart’s most important community hubs and community feedback will play an important role in shaping the final design.
Potential improvements being considered include safer pedestrian crossings, improved accessibility, increased greenery and shade, enhanced public spaces, opportunities for outdoor dining and activation, and stronger recognition of local identity through storytelling and public art.
More information about the project and engagement activities will be available on the City of Hobart’s Your Say website from 5 October 2026.

Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:
“This intersection is at the heart of the South Hobart community - it connects schools, playgrounds, shops and cafes, public transport and community facilities.
“We know there have been long-standing concerns about safety and accessibility at this location as the community have petitioned us a couple of times.
“Improving safety for school children, older residents and people with mobility needs is the primary focus of this project. At the same time, we want to create a greener, more attractive, and welcoming place for people to meet, shop and spend time.
“This project was first flagged as part of our Neighbourhood Shopping Precincts Program which saw significant investments made in Lenah Valley and New Town. I’m glad this is back on the agenda so we can create an area that really celebrates this neighbourhood hub.
“We’re at the concept design stage and so we’re keen to hear from the people who use this intersection every day. Their feedback will help shape a preferred design that reflects the needs and aspirations of the South Hobart community.”
Quotes to be attributed to business owner Emmanuel Dellas:
“As a joint property owner of the adjacent shopping centre we are extremely excited about the future intersection upgrade project.
“It will be a major boost for our existing tenants and customers providing better access and safety with much needed additional parking.
"Recently we have completed a major re-development at our own site demolishing an old service station and constructing additional commercial spaces with much needed off-street parking.
“Our tenants are hardworking family run businesses and this project is an acknowledgement of their contribution to the South Hobart Community.
“I acknowledge the hard work of the Hobart City Council and the Lord Mayor in moving the Project forward and look forward to its commencement in the future.”
