Every five years, we revise our Dog Management Policy to help support both pet owners and the broader community, as part of our commitment in fostering a safe, responsible, and dog-friendly community.
The policy covers important information all dog owners need to know about ensuring their pooches are safe and happy.
So, what do dog owners need to know?
Microchipping and registration
Making sure your dog can always find their way home.
All dogs need to be microchipped and registered so they can be easily identified if they get lost. The dog registration period is between 1 July and 30 June each year.
While it's a legal requirement, registration does a lot more than just tick a box. It helps us reunite lost dogs with their owners faster, supports responsible ownership, and helps plan dog-friendly services across Hobart.
If you've recently welcomed a new furry friend into the family, now's the time to register them and double-check their microchip details are up to date. And for those seasoned dog owners – renewals are now due.
Exercise areas
Hobart is full of great dog parks and spots for dogs to stretch their legs. Our new policy outlines where and when they can visit them.
Dog exercise areas
Across Hobart, you'll find a mix of off-lead areas for dogs who love to run, on-lead spaces for more relaxed walks, and restricted zones where rules may change depending on the time of day or activities (like sports on fields).
There are also some places where dogs aren't allowed, so it's always worth checking the signs before heading out. Keeping to these rules helps everyone enjoy our parks and public spaces and avoids the risk of a fine.
All dog owners are encouraged to take a look at the full Dog Management Strategy. A few minutes spent getting familiar with the rules can make a big difference - for you, your dog, and the whole community.
