Dog registration and microchipping

Payment cannot be made when you submit the application. Once we receive your application, we will contact you to arrange payment of the registration fee.

Your dog's registration tag will be posted to you after payment has been received. Your dog is not registered until payment has been made.

Puppy registrations

All dogs must be registered by the time they reach six months of age. A dog must be registered by a person aged 18 years or over. If a dog belongs to a child, the registration must be in the name of a parent or guardian.

You may register your puppy before it reaches six months of age. While no registration fee will apply, you will need to purchase a registration tag.

Registering your puppy early ensures it is recorded in the City's registration system and can be identified if it becomes lost. Once your puppy reaches six months of age, the applicable registration fee will apply from the next registration period.

You must tell us in writing within 14 days if there is a change to your dog's registration details.

This includes if:

• your dog will usually be kept at a different address in Hobart for 60 days or longer
• you and your dog move to another council area
• your dog is lost, has passed away or is no longer kept by you
• your postal or contact details have changed.

Keeping your dog's registration details up to date helps us contact you quickly if your dog is found.

Change of ownership

If the ownership of a dog has changed you will need to complete the transfer form.

Both the previous owner and new owner are required to complete and sign each relevant section.

If the dog has been declared dangerous or is a restricted breed, please contact us before transferring ownership, as additional approval may be required.

You may be fined if you do not tell us about relevant changes within 14 days, as required under the Dog Control Act 2000.

Microchip records

Updating your dog's registration details with the City of Hobart does not automatically update the details associated with your dog's microchip.

To update the owner or contact information linked to the microchip, you will need to contact the microchip database company that manages your dog's records.

If you are unsure which database company holds your dog's microchip information, please visit the Pet Address website and enter your dog's microchip number.

The website will identify the relevant database company, and you can then contact them directly to update your details.

Registration fees vary depending on factors such as whether your dog is desexed, a pension concession applies, or your dog qualifies for a special registration category.

The below fees apply from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

Pensioners: unsterilised dog $75, sterilised dog $32. A pension card is to be provided at time of registration. The discount applies to one dog only. Not applicable to Health Care Card holders and no other discounts will be applied.

If your dog's registration tag has been lost, damaged or become difficult to read, you can request a replacement by email us at coh@hobartcity.com.au.

A replacement tag fee applies. Once we receive your request, we will contact you to arrange for payment. Your new registration tag will be posted to you after payment has been received.

All dogs over six months of age must be microchipped.

A microchip is a small electronic device, about the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted beneath your dog's skin by a veterinarian or authorised implanter. Each microchip contains a unique identification number that can be used to identify your dog if they become lost.

Microchipping and registration are separate requirements, and both are important. While registration identifies your dog with the City of Hobart, a microchip links your dog to your contact details through an approved microchip database.

You will be given a Certificate of Identification, which will include the microchip number. Please let us know this number as soon as possible.

Why microchipping is important

Microchipping can:

• improve the chances of being reunited with your dog if they become lost
• help animal management officers, veterinarians and shelters identify your dog
• provide permanent identification that cannot be lost or removed like a collar or tag
• support responsible dog ownership.

Keep your details up to date

If you change your address, phone number or email address, it is important to update both:

• your dog registration details with the City of Hobart
• your details recorded on your dog's microchip database.

Outdated contact information may delay or prevent your dog being returned to you if it is found.
