Hobart has many areas for walking dogs that are worth exploring with your dog and fellow dog lovers, writes Tanzi Lewis from the Hobart Dog Walking Association.
Consider joining the Hobart Dog Walking Association to discover new places to walk your dog while socialising with other dogs and their owners.
The City of Hobart has a long-standing relationship with the our association, which provides community feedback on dog management, participating in events, consultations and promotions in and around Hobart.
We are a member of Tasmanian Dog Walking Clubs and regularly host group walks for the wider dog community on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year.
Benefits of social dog walks
Dogs are pack animals and so it’s healthy for dogs to socialise with other dogs and people. People also benefit from getting to know places for dog walking and developing greater community connections. Our dog walks also help us learn more about dogs.
Understanding local rules
We organise walks throughout Greater Hobart. As each municipality has different rules, it is important to be familiar with local regulations and the lay of the land before heading out.
Advocating for better dog exercise areas
Our association was formed in 2006 to promote the importance of public dog on-lead and off-lead exercise areas for the physical, mental and social health of dogs and people.
Our social walks provide a way to check out different areas for when advocating to councils. By walking in different areas, we understand which areas are better served than others for dog exercise.
Off-lead dog exercise areas should be easily accessible and within 15 minutes of where the dog lives, as not everyone can drive out of the area to exercise their dogs.
Walks for dogs and owners
We hold several dog walks a month. The walks are held in different locations to get to know (or revisit) a mix of walking areas for dogs, and because variety is important.
Some walks are held in off-lead areas, while others are conducted on-lead, depending on council designations and local requirements.
The walks are generally easy to medium in difficulty, making them suitable for dogs and owners of varying ages and fitness levels.
