Visit the recycling unit at the Hobart Council Centre
The recycling unit at 16 Elizabeth Street displays solutions for hard-to-recycle items. This includes batteries, light globes, toothbrushes, pens, mobile phones, toner cartridges, and more.
Please note: the unit only accepts domestic quantities. Commercial offices should use it for ideas and education, not disposal.
Familiarise yourself with accepted materials at McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre (The Tip)
The Tip accepts sorted:
- recycling cardboard
- batteries
- globes
- green waste
- FOGO material
- e-waste
- certain hazardous items.
Bringing separated materials directly is the cheapest option and ensures correct disposal.
Set up collection points
Create collection spots for batteries, small e-waste, pens, and light globes. Use our A to Z waste guide to label stations clearly and reduce contamination.
Prioritise food waste: implement a FOGO service
Removing food scraps from landfill is the biggest environmental win. FOGO accepts food scraps, tissues, coffee grounds, pizza boxes, and garden waste.
Food in landfill produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Diverting it greatly reduces emissions and supports composting at the Tip.
Review current bin set ups
Ensure your landfill, mixed recycling, and FOGO bins match Hobart guidelines.
Improve signage and simplify bin placement to reduce contamination.
Engage staff early
Share clear guides, assign recycling champions, and visit the recycling unit at Hobart Council Centre for inspiration.
Consider collection services later
There are companies that offer business pickups for hard-to-recycle items once internal systems are established.
