Today the City of Hobart is the first council in Tasmania to launch a live online city map showing users real-time parking availability across Hobart's on-street and multi-storey car parks.

The new Park My Ride map uses in-ground sensors installed in high traffic precincts – including the city centre, Midtown, North Hobart, and Salamanca - updating every 15 seconds, showing only available parking spaces in real time to help drivers and their passengers find a spot fast and reduce congestion.

The map will be of great benefit for shoppers and businesses, showing almost instant availability for those popping in for a quick pick up or those needing longer to do their Christmas shopping with the festive season just around the corner.

The map also highlights the availability of over 40 accessible parking bays – making it easier for all users to plan their journey to the city and find the right park for their needs.

As well as the nearly 2000 on street parking bays with in-ground sensors, Park My Ride also displays live availability in:

  • Argyle Street Car Park (1,133 spaces)
  • Centrepoint Car Park (782 spaces)
  • Hobart Central Car Park (462 spaces)
  • Condell Place Car Park (83 spaces)
  • Dunn Place Car Park (82 spaces)
  • Lefroy Street Car Park (47 spaces)

The map also includes details on permitted stay times, and street view and navigation, all in one easy-to-use platform.

Developed by the City’s Transport and Business Intelligence teams, Park My Ride is a key action from the Council-endorsed Parking and Kerbside Management 10 year Plan, aimed at improving user experience through better wayfinding and real-time availability.

Access Park My Ride through the City of Hobart’s website and add it to any smartphone’s home screen for quick and easy journey planning.

Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Acting Lord Mayor Dr Zelinda Sherlock:

"The map will be beneficial to not only regular Hobart commuters, but to business owners and visitors as well. Especially coming into the Christmas period, finding a park for shoppers is essential for those needing to make quick stops to purchase their gifts from local businesses.

"It really highlights the amount of available parking in the city, allowing visitors to plan their journey with confidence, knowing they’ll find a park - making Hobart a more attractive destination for shopping, dining, and events.

"Efficient parking management is a key strategy for supporting economic sustainability. By helping drivers find parking quickly, Park My Ride encourages more visits to retail, hospitality precincts, and key services.

"We're encouraging users to add the map to their home screen, making it easier to find the next available parking spot in the area.

“Please remember for safety reasons, drivers should not use the map while driving. Plan ahead or ask a passenger to assist so you can stay focused on the road.

"Park My Ride also aims to improve convenience and helps to combat the ongoing stigma from the community around a perceived lack of parking in Hobart. This map will help you find one of over 4000 parking spaces within Hobart."

Quotes to be attributed to Confederation of Greater Hobart Business Chair Edwin Johnstone:

“Smarter parking management systems are vital for the future viability of CBD businesses.

"Parking availability is critical for local businesses, and any initiative that improves access is a welcome step.

"Less time looking for parking means more time spent in local shops, cafes, and restaurants.

"The live map makes it easier to find parking, especially during the busy festive season."
