ibis Styles Hobart staff get hands-on to help Tasmania's wildlife

02 September 2025

Staff from ibis Styles Hobart have swapped hotel uniforms for work gloves in a heartfelt effort to support Wildlife Safe Tasmania, deepening their connection to the local community and its unique wildlife.

As part of a recent working bee, the team visited the property of a dedicated local volunteer who has been caring for injured and orphaned wildlife for over 40 years.

The day saw staff cleaning and painting nesting boxes—crafted by the Kingston Men's Shed—that will be used to shelter ringtail possums and raise funds for Wildlife Safe Tasmania.

Richard Pollocks, Front Office Manager at ibis Styles Hobart, said the experience was both eye-opening and inspiring.

"We learnt so much about how to care for Tasmania's wildlife, and it really stuck with me," Richard said.

"Just days later, I found a stranded joey on Harrington Street and knew exactly what to do—I called Bonorong Wildlife Rescue for help."

Elleke Leurs from Wildlife Safe Tasmania praised the hotel's involvement, saying it made a real difference.

"The support from ibis Styles Hobart has been incredible," Elleke said.

"Their enthusiasm and willingness to get involved helps us continue our mission to protect and rehabilitate Tasmania's native animals."

Since then, the team came together to build on their initial work by planting trees and even building a bandicoot bungalow.

The initiative has also had a ripple effect within the hotel.

Staff now feel more confident discussing local wildlife with guests, enriching the visitor experience with authentic, informed insights.

Hotel Operations Manager Susanty Daale-Setiady said the team is passionate about giving back to Hobart.

"We're proud to be part of a community that values kindness and connection," Susanty said.

"Whether it's through wildlife care or our Recycle Rewards initiative—where staff collect recyclables to raise funds for local charities—we're committed to making a positive impact."

The hotel's efforts align with the City of Hobart's Warm Hearts campaign, which celebrates stories of compassion and community spirit during the winter months.

ibis Styles Hobart's contribution is a shining example of how businesses can play a meaningful role in supporting local causes.

With official certification by Ecotourism Australia and sustainability at the core of its operations, ibis Styles Hobart plans to continue supporting Wildlife Safe Tasmania and other community initiatives throughout 2025.
