Golden Secateurs Award
Every year the City of Hobart recognises an outstanding Bushcare volunteer.
It is someone who has made a positive and lasting contribution to the conservation of Hobart's bushland reserves. They also inspire others to do the same.
These conservation heroes are given a Bushcare Legend Golden Secateurs Award and go into our Golden Secateurs Hall of Fame.
2025 award winner
Andy Wakefield has been the Ridgeway Bushcare convenor since 2017. Like all our wonderful Bushcare convenors, Andy does a great job of bringing together a diverse and busy bunch of locals.
The thing we most love about Andy as convenor is that he inspires the next generation to care for nature. He involves his own children and their friends in Bushcare, where they explore, take on challenges and participate in fun educational activities like using wildlife cameras and learning about native wildlife through building bandicoot bunkers.
About the awards
The awards began in 2008 and our first Golden Secateurs Legend was Antony Ault, a stalwart of the Friends of Knocklofty Bushcare group. Antony was recognised for his role in helping to rid Knocklofty Reserve of gorse and other environmental weeds.
Antony has always been meticulous about documenting the work carried out at Knocklofty Reserve. It is a skill now considered best practice for managing the health of our bushland reserves.
Bushcare will always be deeply grateful for the work of its Bushcare Legends.
