Hobart Neighbourhood Greenways Study

Hobart Neighbourhood Greenways Study

In 2025, the City of Hobart hosted Oliver Oglesby, a fellow from the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative.

His role was to help us understand:

  1. Where are people currently cycling?
  2. Where are streets best for cycling?
  3. Where are people likely to shift from a car to cycling?
  4. Where are people likely to face barriers to cycling access?

The outcome of his work was the 2025 Hobart Neighbourhood Greenways Study. This is part of the work that informed the Hobart Bike Plan.

This study was completed during a ten-week fellowship with the City of Hobart as part of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. The effort advances our priorities of climate action and transport choice. It does so by suggesting a network of safe, accessible, active routes through Hobart's suburbs.

The fellowship was conceived around analysing and collecting data to help us better understand where investments in the bike network can achieve the highest uptake of new bike trips. In promoting data-informed decision-making, the project aims to identify important changes to neighbourhood connections that can increase cycling for short trips – particularly for people who face transport inequity.

The final report delivers recommendations focused on developing a network of Neighbourhood Greenways. This has been further developed as part of the Hobart Bike Plan.
