The City of Hobart is working on a new interactive map to help people find dog exercise areas across Hobart.
It will help you discover the nearest places to exercise your dog while following local rules and regulations.
The map will be colour-coded to make it easy to use and will clearly show time-based restrictions.
Hobart has many areas to exercise your dog, both on-lead and off-lead.
Regularly exercising your dog can help reduce nuisance behaviour such as uncontrolled barking and digging. It also helps relieve boredom and releases pent-up energy.
Hobart is home to off-lead, on-lead and restricted dog exercise areas. Restricted areas are either time restricted or, in the case of sportsgrounds, activity restricted.
There are also areas where dogs are not allowed. You may be fined if you walk your dog in those areas or allow a dog off the lead in an on-lead area.
Walking your dog
There are certain things you need to remember when walking your dog. These are set out in the Dog Control Act 2000 and within our Dog Management Policy.
When in a designated off-lead area, dogs must remain under effective control of the person in charge of the dog at all times.
Dogs must remain on-lead at all times when on a road or road-related area such as footpaths and nature strips.
Restricted breeds and dogs declared dangerous are still subject to conditions in an off-lead exercise area.
You are not permitted to walk more than two dogs at a time on a footpath.
Dog tidy bags
If your dog poos in a public place you are required to pick up after it.
The City of Hobart provides biodegradable dog tidy bags in the majority of its parks to dispose of your dog's droppings, so please use them. You should also always carry your own dog poo bags.
The bags are made from plants, not oil, and certified under Australian composting standards.
These bags can be disposed of in your home FOGO bin.
