Dogs

Responsible dog ownership helps keep your dog, other people, animals and wildlife safe.

While registration tags, collars and microchips are important, there are many other ways you can help your dog become a happy, healthy and valued member of the community.

As a responsible dog owner, you should:

  • register your dog with the City so it can be identified and returned to you if it becomes lost
  • ensure your dog is microchipped and keep your contact details up to date
  • keep your dog securely contained on your property
  • desex your dog if it is not intended for breeding
  • ensure your dog receives regular veterinary care and vaccinations
  • always keep your dog on a lead in public, unless you are in a designated off-lead area
  • keep your dog under effective control at all times, including in off-lead areas
  • clean up and dispose of your dog's droppings
  • prevent your dog from roaming
  • take your dog to obedience training and provide regular exercise
  • prevent your dog from barking excessively or becoming a nuisance
  • provide your dog with a healthy diet, fresh water and appropriate shelter.

Dogs must be registered and microchipped by six months of age. Registration helps us reunite lost dogs with their owners and supports the maintenance of dog exercise areas and animal management services across Hobart.
