Human Rights Day: A Community Celebration

Next date: Wednesday, 10 December 2025 | 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM

Human Rights Day

Join us on Human Rights Day to connect with Hobart's communities through cultural performances, fun activities and acts of kindness.

Come together with friends, neighbours and community members to share stories, enjoy performances, and take part in activities that celebrate inclusion, respect, diversity, and the simple ways we can make a difference every day.

There will be music, creative workshops, information, interactive activities, and opportunities to connect and celebrate what makes our community strong – our shared humanity.

Let's stand together with kindness, respect, and connection this Human Rights Day.

Everyone is welcome, this is a free event.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December – it is a time to recognise the dignity, equality, and freedom of every person. It reminds us that everyone – no matter their background, ability, age, gender, or beliefs – deserves to be treated with kindness, fairness, and respect.

Join the impromptu choir!

Be part of something fun, friendly, and inclusive! Led by Monique Brumby and Jude Elliot, the choir is a joyful collaboration between City of Hobart staff and community.

Everyone's welcome to join in, no experience needed. Just bring your voice, your enthusiasm, and a sense of community.

The lyrics to the songs are listed below – jump in whenever you are ready and sing along.

Stand By Me (Ben E. King version)

Meaning

The world is a better place when we feel loved and supported.

Acts of kindness and compassion for others reduces fear and sadness.

Lyrics

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand, stand by me
Stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me
Stand by me

(Instrumental)

Darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me
Stand by me

Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me
Oh stand by me, oh won't you stand now, oh stand
Stand by me

Lean on Me (Bill Withers version)

Meaning

Reaching out for support is an important step to feeling okay.

We all need to lean on others for support at different times in our lives.

When we let friends know that we need a hand, we are being kind to ourselves and opening ourselves up to the kindness of others.

Lyrics

Hmm... hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm
Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain
We all have sorrow

But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me
When you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on...

For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow

For no one can fill
Those of your needs that you won't let show

You just call on me brother when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on

I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me
When you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on...

For it won't be long
Till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me brother
When you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on

I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry

I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me

Call me
If you need a friend
(call me)
Call me (call me)
If you need a friend
(call me)
If you ever need a friend
(call me)
Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me)

If you need a friend
(call me)
Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me) Call me
(call me)
