Hire-and-ride e-bikes

E-bikes

The City of Hobart enables shared e-bike services to operate in the city.

Shared e-bikes provide a low-cost transport option for residents and visitors, helping people travel around the city while reducing emissions and supporting active travel.

Lime currently operates shared e-bikes in Hobart under a permit issued by the City.

Lime can be contacted at hobart@li.me.

What's changed?

We have transitioned to an e-bike-only shared micromobility scheme.

Hire-and-ride e-scooters are no longer available in Hobart following a Council decision to move away from shared e-scooters.

Shared e-bikes are now available and are operated by Lime.

E-bikes are better suited to Hobart's streets and cycling network and are more commonly used as a transport option for everyday trips.

More information

Ride safely

When using a shared e-bike, you must:

  • be at least 16 years old
  • wear an approved helmet (provided with the e-bike or your own)
  • follow Tasmanian Road Rules
  • ride with care and consideration for other road and path users
  • park responsibly when ending your trip.

Where you can ride and park?

We have established designated zones in the inner city to help keep streets and footpaths safe and accessible.

A map will be available in the coming weeks.

Parking correctly

When ending your ride:

  1. park upright and securely.
  2. leave clear access for pedestrians.
  3. keep clear of:
    • footpaths and pedestrian through-routes
    • building entrances
    • disability access points
    • crossings and intersections
    • bus stops and public transport infrastructure
  4. take a clear end-of-trip photo through the Lime app.

Poorly parked devices may result in warnings, penalties or additional charges from the operator.

Shared micromobility data

We partner with Ride Report, a global micromobility platform manager, to improve transparency and support evidence-based transport planning.

Shared e-bike data helps us understand travel patterns, infrastructure needs and opportunities to improve active transport connections.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why can't I hire an e-scooter anymore?

We have moved to an e-bike-only shared scheme following ongoing regulatory, safety and parking concerns.

E-bikes are more commonly used for transport trips and integrate better with Hobart's cycling infrastructure.

Can I still hire an e-bike?

Yes. Shared e-bikes are available in Hobart through Lime.

Can I still ride my own e-scooter?

Yes. Privately owned e-scooters remain legal in Tasmania when used in accordance with Tasmanian Road Rules.

Can I ride an e-scooter in an on-road bicycle lane?

No.

Currently under the Tasmanian Road Rules 2019, personal mobility devices including "e-scooters" cannot be used to travel on any road with either a marked centre line, or multiple marked individual lanes. As such, "e-scooters" cannot be used to travel on a road with a marked on-road bicycle lane.

The City of Hobart continues to work with the State Government on reviewing these rules.

How do I report a dumped or poorly parked shared e-bike?

Contact Lime directly.
