The City cannot approve installing shields on the front or sides of street lights. This can create safety risks for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Rear shields may be considered, but only if they do not reduce lighting on roads or footpaths.
Street and public space lighting must meet Australian Standards. These set minimum brightness levels. Adding shields can cause lighting to fall below these required levels, making public roads and footpaths less safe.
If street light glare is affecting your home, the City can investigate. Before we do, you’ll need to show that you’ve tried reasonable steps to reduce the light entering your property. For example, using block out curtains or block out blinds.
Please note
While we can assess how street lighting affects your property, in many cases, the most practical solutions need to be managed by the property owner within their property.
We will, however, provide suggestions and help you understand the options available.
