No idea too big or too small: Have your say on Better Streets
Published on 01 May 2026
The City of Hobart is calling on residents, businesses and property owners to help shape the future of Augusta Road, Upper Elizabeth Street and surrounds as part of a new Better Streets project.
The project focuses on Upper Elizabeth Street (between Federal Street and Augusta Road) and Augusta Road (between Elizabeth Street and Greenway Avenue) and aims to explore how these streets could become more accessible, more liveable and better for everyone.
The early stage of the project is all about listening to the community.
Better Streets projects look beyond traffic movement to consider walking, cycling, public transport, safety and the overall quality of place in neighbourhood streets.
The project follows the Hobart City Council’s endorsement of several high‑level strategies and plans that call for more detailed, place‑based planning in this area.
Stage 1 engagement is now underway and focuses on:
- sharing information about the project and previous planning work
- outlining past community engagement and Council decisions
- listening to community views, concerns and priorities
- gathering feedback to help guide future concept development.
Community participation is essential and they can get involved by:
- completing the online survey
- registering for an online or in‑person information session with the project team
- sharing what they love about their community through a creative picture or story.
More information about the project, including opportunities to have your say, is available at yoursay.hobartcity.com.au/better-streets
Quotes to be attributed to Acting Hobart Lord Mayor Dr Zelinda Sherlock:
“Our slogan for this is ‘No idea is too big or too small. We want to hear them all’, and that’s exactly what we mean.
“Local people know these streets best, and your experiences, priorities and ideas will help guide how they may evolve in the future.
“Whether you’re a resident, business owner or property owner, your local knowledge can help us understand what’s working, what’s not, and what opportunities exist.
“This is the start of the conversation, and we’re keen to hear from as many people as possible.
“We look forward to working with the community as planning for the future of Augusta Road and Upper Elizabeth Street gets underway.”
Quotes to be attributed to Anglican Parish of New Town/Lenah Valley volunteer and Lenah Valley resident Ruth Thomas:
"Upper Elizabeth Street and Augusta Road is already a very good blend of residential, commercial and various facilities (school, gym, Polish Club, Church and Hall) that draws people into the area.
"I am sure the Hobart City Council Traffic Engineers will be able to make changes to further improve the safety of pedestrians in this busy area.
"Additional seats, lighting and shade will encourage a welcoming atmosphere and enhance its ‘Destination’ status rather than being a ‘drive through only’ area.”
