Northern Suburbs Rapid Bus Project – Joint Council Submission

The City of Hobart has endorsed a joint submission with Glenorchy City Council to the Tasmanian Government’s Northern Suburbs Rapid Bus Project consultation, lodged through the Greater Hobart Partnership. While leaving the option open for light rail, the submission supports the rapid bus concept in principle and recognises the potential benefits of improved public transport connections between Hobart and the northern suburbs. However, it also highlights the need for more detailed information to help the community understand the proposal and its potential impacts. The councils are seeking greater transparency around project costs, governance arrangements, operating funding and potential property impacts, as well as clearer information about how the project would integrate with wider transport planning across Greater Hobart. The submission also emphasises the importance of a coordinated, funded approach to future land-use planning along the corridor to ensure the project can deliver its intended benefits. The endorsed submission will be provided to Building Tasmania, the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Greater Hobart Committee.

Macquarie Point Precinct – Dilapidation Report – Condition C5 – Consultation

Ahead of works commencing at Macquarie Point, the City of Hobart has completed its consultation on a series of dilapidation reports prepared by the Macquarie Point Development Corporation. The reports document the condition of relevant roads, footpaths, stormwater infrastructure, the Hobart Rivulet and other public assets in and around the precinct before construction begins. Following a detailed review by Council officers, including asset and waterways specialists, the City is satisfied the reports appropriately address matters relevant to Council assets and comply with the requirements of the State Policies and Projects (Macquarie Point Precinct) Order 2025. The reports will be considered by the Acting Secretary of Building Tasmania.

Petition – Request for Public Meeting

The City of Hobart has noted the outcome of the verification process for the petition titled Keep Green Spaces in South Hobart Shared for all Community Members. Of the 1,322 signatures submitted, 761 were verified against the State Electoral Roll or General Manager’s Roll. While this demonstrates significant community interest in the matter, the petition did not meet the statutory requirement of 1,000 verified electors under the Local Government Act 1993 to trigger a public meeting. The lead petitioners have been advised of the outcome. Council moved to discuss the option of holding a public meeting at a future Hobart workshop when the new term of council commences.

Draft Heritage Hobart Strategy 2026

The draft Heritage Hobart Strategy 2026 will now be released for community feedback, providing residents and stakeholders with the opportunity to help shape the future of heritage management in Hobart. Developed with input from the City Heritage Committee and supported by the Tasmanian Heritage Council, the strategy sets out a vision to celebrate Hobart’s stories, care for civic heritage assets and support high-quality development in heritage settings. The strategy will help guide future initiatives including heritage storytelling, conservation of significant places and collections, adaptive reuse of historic buildings, and practical guidance for property owners and developers.
