McRobies gross pollutant trap
We have installed a large gross pollutant trap just below McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre (The Tip). The trap will help prevent pollution from entering the Hobart Rivulet.
Encased in concrete, the trap is buried in an eight metre hole on City-owned land. It helps stop litter, sediment and even free-floating oil and grease from entering and polluting the rivulet.
Installation of the trap is the result of strong public interest in protecting the platypus from dangerous litter. This includes hair ties and string that can injure or even kill platypus.
The $600 000 project was fully funded by the City of Hobart.
What is a gross pollutant trap?
A gross pollutant trap is a stormwater management device that captures large amounts of debris, litter, sediment and pollutants before they enter local waterways such as rivers, streams, rivulets and beaches. This helps reduce water pollution and improves the health of aquatic environments.
How does this project benefit the community?
By capturing large pollutants and debris, the gross pollutant trap helps:
- improve water quality in the Hobart Rivulet by intercepting pollutants from the McRobies Gully stormwater system. This unit increases the storage volume for pollutants from approximately one cubic metre available in the existing "sock" to 9.5 m3 of litter storage capacity and 2000L of oil storage capacity
- reduce the amount of litter and plastic waste in the environment
- protect wildlife and aquatic ecosystems
- enhance the visual appeal of public spaces and water bodies
- protect our native platypus population from entanglement in litter.
How does this project improve stormwater quality?
The trap captures large pollutants, such as litter, leaves, sediments and other pollutants. It captures them before they enter the stormwater system and flow into natural waterways. This improves the quality of the water entering rivers, streams, and oceans, and helps protect sensitive local ecosystems.
What are the long-term benefits?
The trap helps improve long-term water quality, reduce pollution in public spaces, and contribute to the overall health of local ecosystems. It's a sustainable investment in Hobart's environmental health and future.
What happens after the installation is complete?
The gross pollutant trap will require ongoing maintenance. This is to remove accumulated pollutants and ensure it continues to function effectively. We will handle regular inspections and cleaning as part of our stormwater management program.
