Delivering local road priorities in Hobart

The Albanese Labor Government is continuing to partner with the City of Hobart to deliver practical road upgrades across Hobart suburbs, with construction set to begin on Roads to Recovery projects.
Works are expected to start during the week of 19 to 23 January on two projects funded under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program, with further projects to follow once approvals are finalised.
The projects getting underway include:
Doyle Avenue, Lenah Valley
- Major resurfacing works between McCann Crescent and Giblin Street, including asphalt inlay and targeted pavement repairs.
Total project cost $650,000, fully funded by the Albanese Government.
Elizabeth Street, North Hobart
- Road resurfacing between Elphinstone Road and Augusta Road to address surface cracking and pavement deformation.
Total project cost $650,000, with $446,213 from the Albanese Government and $203,787 from the City of Hobart.
These works are part of the Albanese Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting local Councils to maintain and improve their local road networks, making everyday travel safer and smoother for local residents, businesses, and visitors.
The Albanese Government is progressively doubling funding to the Roads to Recovery Program from $500 million to $1 billion per year, funding that goes directly to local Councils for road maintenance and repair.
This critical program gives councils the certainty they need to plan and deliver essential maintenance and upgrades, supporting local jobs while improving the safety and condition of local roads.
This investment is part of the Albanese Government’s broader commitment to local infrastructure, including increases to the Black Spots Funding Program and the establishment of the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.

Senator for Tasmania, Carol Brown
“Without funding increases from the Albanese Government, local projects across Hobart wouldn’t get off the ground,” Senator Carol Brown said.
“I’ll continue to work with our local community to advocate for projects that will support local jobs, boost liveability, and stimulate the Tasmanian economy.”
“When we work together, we get better outcomes for our communities – which is why the Albanese Labor Government has increased the funding available to local councils to support the continued delivery of their targeted road improvements.”
Hobart Lord Mayor, Anna Reynolds
"Throughout summer the City of Hobart is supercharging its work in one of its core areas of responsibility, roads," Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
"Resurfacing roads stops potholes, cracks and hazards from forming and creates a safer road network in our city. Resurfacing roads also increases the life of our assets by keeping water out of the underlying pavement. The money we spend now on resurfacing important routes will result in major cost savings down the line.
"Our roads are the arteries of our city used by many people in our community. And while we’re already spending nearly a quarter of our infrastructure budget on roads, there’s always more we could spend, so this federal government contribution is welcome.”
