The City of Hobart invites everyone to come together this Human Rights Day for a vibrant celebration of inclusion, respect and community connection.

A highlight of the event will be the impromptu choir, led by creative producer Jude Elliot. This joyful collaboration between City of Hobart staff and the community is all about fun, connection and inclusivity.

No experience is needed – just bring your voice, enthusiasm and a sense of community. Lyrics for the songs Stand By Me and Lean On Me are available on the City of Hobart website.

Held on Human Rights Day – Wednesday 10 December, the event will feature:

  • Live music and cultural performances
  • Creative workshops and interactive activities
  • Acts of kindness and opportunities to connect

“Human Rights Day is not just a date on the calendar – it is a call to act with respect, kindness and connection, our community celebration brings those values to life.

“Celebrating the day amplifies the voices of those who need to be heard, providing a platform for people with lived experience and community organisations to share their stories and shape change.

“Bringing people together on this day emphasises that everyone has the right to participate, contribute and feel welcome in their community.”

Quotes to be attributed to Palawa community member, event host Kieran Lonergan:

“Human Rights Day is a powerful reminder that every person deserves the freedom to express their identity, their experiences, and their needs.

“At its heart, human rights are about community, about fostering understanding, acceptance, and compassion for one another.

“Our differences are part of our collective strength, and regardless of who we are or where we come from, we all hold the same inherent rights as human beings.

“Today is an opportunity to honour those rights and reaffirm our commitment to upholding them for everyone.”
