Hobart winter wander walks for the whole family

06 July 2026

Pipeline Track

Families looking for a low-cost way to spend time together these winter school holidays are being encouraged to lace up their walking shoes and wander through their own backyard.

The City of Hobart manages some magnificent natural areas that are home to beautiful nature trails.

With crisp winter air, towering eucalypts and fluffy wildlife close to the city, local walks offer the perfect chance to slow down, unplug and feel the grounding effects of being outdoors without spending a cent.

The walk from Waterworks Reserve to Fern Tree is about half a day return if you include stops.

Starting at Site 9 in Waterworks Reserve, the 4.6km trail provides a peaceful and educational journey through some of Hobart’s most picturesque mountain foothills.

It follows the historic Pipeline Track past Pipe-Head Well, Gentle Annie Falls and beautiful stone aqueducts before reaching Fern Tree, where you can stop and have some lunch by the fire at the Fern Tree Tavern.

Return the way you came back down to Waterworks. Alternatively, you can book a barbecue site at Waterworks Reserve to cook your mob a feed.

Tails on the trails

The fur babies don’t have to miss out!

Many tracks in our bushland reserves are dog walking friendly (on track and on lead only, unless otherwise stated).

Knocklofty Reserve near West Hobart has many options.

Our suggestion? The 4.1km Summit Loop that rewards walkers with elevated views and a variety of bushland settings. Slow down and take in the sights and sounds of the forest and the gentle pace of a winter wander.

Those after a shorter outing can choose the Signal Station Circuit at Kriwalayti/Mount Nelson.

The 3.1km Signal Station Circuit offers an easy stroll through open forest, making it ideal for younger children.

For other options take a look at our Hobart Nature Trail brochures, the Wellington Park Bushwalking brochure or the Greater Hobart Trails website

These free and varied trails showcase the natural beauty on Hobart’s doorstep and provide families with a simple way to connect with nature during the school break.
