Environmental weeds

Environmental weeds are one of the biggest threats facing Hobart's bushland reserves.

They take over ecosystems and choke waterways. This pushes out native plants and destroys native animal habitat.

Of the 1513 plant species recorded in Hobart's bushlands, more than a third are introduced species. Not all are a threat to our bushlands, but those that are have to be taken very seriously.

Blackberry

Once blackberry has established in an area, it can outcompete and prevent the growth of native vegetation.

Daphne laurel

Foxglove is a toxic, introduced weed that poses a threat to Tasmania's natural environment and agricultural sector.

Karamu

We're working to eradicate the large, invasive weed karamu from our forests, and need the public to help by reporting sightings.

Orange hawkweed

A highly invasive alpine weed that has been found in Fern Tree and South Hobart.

Serrated tussock

Serrated tussock is an environmental weed that leads to increased fire risk and reduced land value.

Willows

Willows are a serious environmental weed in Hobart's waterways because of their potential for spread and ability to transform stream-side ecology.
