The City of Hobart’s Bushcare program, successfully running for more than 30 years, has always been close to the hearts of our volunteers and staff.
It helps connect people with nature and feel empowered to do their bit to help protect and restore Hobart’s forests, woodlands and native grasslands.
The City encourages a close connection between our Bushcare groups and Landcare Tasmania, and sponsors Landcare membership for nine of our Bushcare groups, including Friends of Knocklofty Reserve, Lenah Valley Bushcare and Waterworks Valley.
Whether it be to expand working bee sites, connect with others, gain exposure or seek training, education and support, being a Landcare member has many benefits.

Landcare toolkit
To support this important connection Landcare Tasmania has launched a practical guide to help councils and Landcare members with ready-to-use tools for working together to care for our landscapes, waterways and communities.
The Landcare Member Toolkit responds to the growing recognition of the important role community-led Landcare and Bushcare groups plays in tackling environmental challenges, building climate resilience and strengthening local connections.
Landcare Tasmania CEO Peter Stronach says councils and community Landcare groups share a common goal — caring for our local environment.
“This toolkit gives both sides the practical steps they need to work together more effectively and achieve bigger, longer-lasting results,” he says.

Sharing ideas
The toolkit contains case studies that showcase the positive impact of collaboration between councils and Landcare.
These examples can be used by councils and Landcare groups to see what others are doing well and stimulate ideas for improvement.
The City of Hobart gains mention for celebrating the achievements of our Bushcare groups in newsletters and the media. You may even recognise the City of Hobart Bushcare signature orange vests being worn by our Mount Nelson Landcare volunteers on the front cover!
Bushcare has already benefitted from its relationship with Landcare Tasmania, and we all stand to grow stronger by using this great new reference tool.
People powered movement
We know our Bushcare volunteers play a vital role in helping to protect and care for Hobart’s native bushland parks and reserves, and the wildlife that call them home.
We keep damaging environmental weeds at bay and create healthy habitat through our community planting days.
And our volunteers are part of a much bigger environmental movement in Tasmania, one that in one year alone contributed $7.4 million of environmental restoration work alone.
