Public art and murals

Jasper Kelly

We are a proud supporter of street art, public art and privately commissioned murals.

In 2019, Hobart City Council endorsed the City of Hobart Public Art Framework. This document references the overarching principles of the Creative Hobart framework. It sets out a series of guiding principles and directions for the City's Public Art.

The framework aims to:

  • increase the opportunities for a diverse range of artists to work in the public domain
  • facilitate and support public art projects proposed and developed by artists and other community members.

Public art enables people to share their experiences, thoughts, feelings, and imaginations. It enriches our lives by providing us with a way to see and experience the world through the eyes of others.

Before you start

Planning approval is sometimes required before you carry out this creative work. Please see further guidance on when planning permission is required below. If in doubt, please call our Duty Planner on 03 6238 2711 for specific advice on your proposal.

To support creative projects with minimal cost, the City has waived application fees where planning applications are required. If the application is required to be publicly advertised then that cost will still need to be paid. For more information, please see the fees and charges page.

Waiving the planning application fee allows for a growth in public art commissions in Hobart, while still ensuring proper planning oversight of applications.
